Hello everyone,

I'm happy to announce that we've begun a beta test for support for Apple Wide Area Bonjour with DynDNS.com, which also enables DDNS with Apple's networking devices:

  • Apple AirPort Extreme
  • Apple AirPort Express
  • Apple Time Capsule

We've assembled a couple of guides to help you get started:

Apple Wide Area Bonjour and DNS Service Discovery with Custom DNS

Dynamic DNS Support for Apple AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, and Time Capsule

If you have any comments on this beta, please provide them on this post. If you need support for your devices, please create a new question here in the DynDNS.com Community, and we'll be sure to help you out!

Enjoy!

Hi Cory,

Quick question — does the service support Long-Lived Queries and Update Leases?

On an unrelated note — the Airport Utility v5.4.2 is a bit broken and tends to squish TSIG keys to lowercase; just thought I'd mention that on the off-chance it saves your support reps some head scratching.

Best,

Andrew

The current beta does not support LLQ and UL. We currently workaround the bug in 5.4.2 by accepting both mixed case and lower case variants of the key. As soon as Apple updates this software to fix the bug, we'll revert to the proper mixed case only. At first, we started just doing a workaround document (dyndns.com/support/kb/…), but found it better for the user experience to just address the issue in code for the time being. – cvonwallenstein Mar 10 at 0:54

Hi Cory,

I've tried to get this working with my Airport Extreme running version 7.5 (75000.17) and using version 5.5 (550.29) of the Airport Utility but can't get it to work. I've checked over the instructions several times and can't see where I'm going wrong.

I can get my laptop to work though so I guess that I have the DNS set up correctly and I really can't see the difference in what I'm doing between the laptop and the airport.

Any suggestions? Is there something missing in the instructions for the Airport?

Thanks, Alan

Can you post some screenshots of the values you entered (not the "password" of course)? I'll double check the logs on our end and see if I can figure out what's happening. – cvonwallenstein Mar 10 at 23:04

Hi Cory,

The settings for the base station

and here is the host name section:

I did wonder whether I needed to share anything on the airport to get t to work so I published my printer, that turned up as various entries but none with my global hostname.

Alan, For clarity, I moved your question and subsequently answered it over here: dyndnscommunity.com/questions/1087/… – cvonwallenstein Mar 11 at 1:19

Will this work ok with a subdomain instead of a base domain? ie have Custom DNS service on sub.domain.com and configure the rest accordingly, so hostname in AirPort would be "airport.sub.domain.com" etc?

For clarity, I've answered your question on a separate thread: dyndnscommunity.com/questions/1085/… – cvonwallenstein Mar 11 at 1:01

I just gave this a shot and can't seem to get it to work on my Airport extreme. There is an error reported about once a minute in the error log "Wide-Area Bonjour error for "foo.bar.com" (-65537)"

The only variation from the instructions is I only created the first SRV record (_dns-update._udp) as I'm only really interested in the dynamic DNS update at this point. Are the other 5 needed for DNS updates or only service discovery?

You'll need to add the records as the Bonjour client software won't create any records if it can't find a domain to register in. – Andrew TJ Apr 1 at 7:45
