General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I was just wondering if there is a newer list of approved routers that update dyndns correctly. Quite a few of the ones on the approved list are old and i dont see them for sale anymore.

Could anyone chime in if they have one that works out of the box. (preferably a netgear or linksys current model)

I ask because I finally figured how to set up dyndns for a camera system dvr had it working that day and it didnt update the next day when the ip changed. I searched these forums to find out why and it turns out I had a router that was not on the approved list it was a netgear WGR614NAR I upgraded the firmware and still had the same problem.

Thinking that the router was to blame I ordered a linksys wrt54gl configured it and apparently it works. I set it up yesterday and its working remotely at the moment so im figuring that it works in updating the address change while the previous router did not.

One problem that i do have with it however is it appears to lack an option to reserve an ip address for that device. I did discover that on that particular router you can install a program called dd-wrt and give it more functionality (which i may have to do).

Also when i tried access it this morning it did not work but it does now so im guessing there was a lag in updating the ip but it did.

I plan on installing camera dvr systems in a few other facilities so this leads me to 3 questions

  1. on a properly updating router is there a lag time or certain amount of time that it takes to update dyndns about the ip change or is it supposed to be instantaneous?

  2. Is there any newer list or can people chime in and contribute newer wireless routers that do work in updating the ip change (external of course) and also have an local ip reservation table and work right out of the box? I would prefer to have netgear or linksys but only because i have experience with those.

  3. any chance the official list can get updated to include newer hardware clients?

I plan to buy 2 or 3 additional routers to run on other networks so this info would be useful

Thanks

Hello delamerewoods,

...it appears to lack an option to reserve an ip address...

Set the IP as static in the device. Then don't have to worry abou the router getting correct.

Questons:

  1. Depends upon the routers update client. Some may detect the IP change immediately, and update immediately. Some may use a web based detection service and only check for a change eveyry 10 minutes as the software update client does. It is hard to say without first hand or documented experience. But usually 10 minutes would be the norm, if not immmediately.

  2. Not that I have become aware of; unless a community member has their own list or experience they wish to share.

  3. Can't say, as this is a uer-to-use forum, and as such we have no direct association with DynDNS.

...in case one of the devices powers off and any other reason there would be a conflict if the router assigned that ip to something else.

Devices with network interfaces, store their configuration in non-volatile memory of some form; and any susceptibility to forgetting that conf because of a power loss would apply equally well to the router.

When configuring a router as a DHCP server, you will specify a range of IP address to be issued to the IP requesting devices.

When you assign static IP address to any device on the same network, ensure that the address is OUTSIDE the range of those specified for DHCP server use (dynamic IPs). Then there will be no conflict.

regards...

  1. That depends on the router - it may be submitted instantly or up to 10 minutes later, or some other value

  2. This question is designed to capture the community's knowledge and lists the devices others have found to work

  3. You probably don't have enough reputation to edit the entry yourself, but just add another answer and one of us can migrate it into the main answer.

thanks guys for the info.

Scarabaeus- I had set the device to a static local ip but i would have preferred a router that can reserve as well in case one of the devices powers off and any other reason there would be a conflict if the router assigned that ip to something else.

I can confirm that the wrt54gl does work and i will reply to this with at least one different router when i set up another camera dvr system. We already have one of the new spaceship looking linksys ones already but i dont know which model it is atm.

Cry Havok- Thanks for the guide it helped me set it up easier. When the ip change wasnt detected it through me for a little loop. I have a suggestion for your guide can you add a link on it to show the approved/not approved routers so people can check that from the beginning instead of wracking their brains why it doesnt work and/or searching if their particular router works?

Thanks again

I find that linksys E1000 works very well for updating ip changes. And it does have an DHCP reservation list. I have a few DVR's with this router and very happy so far.
