General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I don't quite understand how to go about creating these records in Custom DNS using the expert interface. This is from Google's site. (It seems out SRV records must have the domain appended to them when using the DynDNS management interface)

How can my users chat outside the Google network?
Google makes it possible for your users to chat with people using other messaging services through a process known as federation. Go to Google Talk and open communications to learn more about federation and who we're federating with.

While we're federating with a number of other services, some services aren't currently accessible through the Google Talk network, and your users won't be able to chat with users of those services.

If you'd like your users to have the ability to chat with people connected to the Google Talk network through federated networks, you'll need to edit your Service (SRV) records. You don't need to edit your SRV records for your users to chat with other Google Apps and Gmail users. SRV records are managed by your domain host. We suggest contacting your domain host to find out if you have access to SRV records and how you can make modifications.

When you enter the following information, make sure to replace http://gmail.com with your domain. Don't replace http://google.com.

_xmpp-server._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 5 0 5269 http://xmpp-server.l.google.com.

_xmpp-server._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 20 0 5269 http://xmpp-server1.l.google.com.

_xmpp-server._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 20 0 5269 http://xmpp-server2.l.google.com.

_xmpp-server._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 20 0 5269 http://xmpp-server3.l.google.com.

_xmpp-server._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 20 0 5269 http://xmpp-server4.l.google.com.

_jabber._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 5 0 5269 http://xmpp-server.l.google.com.

_jabber._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 20 0 5269 http://xmpp-server1.l.google.com.

_jabber._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 20 0 5269 http://xmpp-server2.l.google.com.

_jabber._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 20 0 5269 http://xmpp-server3.l.google.com.

_jabber._tcp.gmail.com. IN SRV 20 0 5269 http://xmpp-server4.l.google.com.

Because there are many different domain hosts offering varying options for SRV records, we recommend contacting your domain host directly for assistance. This includes entering the SRV record data, assigning protocols and weights, and other configuration questions. Some domain hosts will allow you to copy and paste the information above exactly as it's offered while other domain hosts require granular data entry.

Closing to stop people adding their own questions as answers.

Using the Advanced interface you'd put _xmpp-server._tcp. in the Host box, SRV as the record type and then the X 0 5269 http://xmpp-server.l.google.com.. Repeat for each further entry.

Thanks, I was thrown off by the http://gmail.com (not realizing that this was simply an example domain they used).

The only thing different is the actual prefs are still needed (ie: 20 0 5269) with http://xmpp-server4.l.google.com.

In order to add SRV records, you must have registered an own domain, and you must have a related DNS hosting service like Custom DNS.

You really better had opened your own question instead of answering with a question to another user's question... :(

RotBlitz not answering the question is not helping anyone either... The question seems interesting to me as i've been looking for the expert interface for 30mn without success... I believe the answer is no! you cannot configure SRV records and such things with the free version

"I believe the answer is no! you cannot configure SRV records and such things with the free version"

Your believe is right. Standard DNS requires your own domain, not a free DynDNS hostname. You can only have an A record for a free hostname.

@vpa2013 - RotBlitz's point is that this forum is designed for one question and then many answers. It is not designed to have people adding their questions as "answers" to the original question.
