General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I would like to get a new .com domain. I have customDNS on at least one with your service already.

The new one I am thinking about is not going to be used, in the short term, for very much. The simplest of pointing it to a hosted website is the most I will need. Do I still require your CustomDNS service for this? I thought I could just pay the annual fee ($15) for the domain - but when ordering it said that I would need the DNS service as well?

Honestly, I really agree with you - there should be a cheaper and simpler alternative to the full Custom DNS package, for precisely the situations you describe. I believe the Dyn staff has considered this before, but I haven't heard anything that indicates any actual plans to change the service offerings (as of today). You could always send them a change request to express your interest in a "lite" custom DNS service. The more, the merrier :-)

One "risk" for Dyn would be that people would try to exploit this by registering one "full" Custom DNS package and lots of "lite" packages pointing to a hostname within the Custom DNS package. But on the other hand, the alternative is that people choose to register their domain elsewhere altogether, where basic DNS hosting may even be included with domain registrations free of charge.

We're just customers, it's not "our" service.

That said, yes, each domain needs a DNS service. With DynDNS that service is Custom DNS.
