Remote access to Windows XP home edition

The process is very similar except you'll need to install a VNC server service. There are a number of options including Real VNC, Ultra VNC and TightVNC. Ultra VNC has the advantage that it has a plugin to encrypt the connection, which makes it the one I'd recommend if you have nothing else that will encrypt the connection (such as a VPN or SSH tunnel).

The key points are:

1. Configure an update client, either on your Windows XP host or on the router (but only on one device)
2. Change the TCP/IP settings on the XP host to use a fixed IP address on the LAN, or (and this is probably easier), configure your router to assign a fixed IP address
3. Install your chosen VNC software, ensuring that it runs as a service. You must also configure it to require authentication, otherwise anybody who connects will have access
4. Check from another host on the LAN that you can access the VNC service
5. Forward 5900/TCP to the IP address of the XP host

You'll either need to leave the computer on, or use a service like Wake-On-LAN Online to wake your computer up remotely (note that your computer has to support Wake-On-LAN and be configured with it enabled in the BIOS).

Alternatively, apply "XP-Prome", which makes a pro-like Windows Pro from Home with just a few registry changes. And yes, this is legal, as you can change your registry settings as you want.
