General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hey,

I'm very naive to DNS and what I need but managed to setup a web server at home with a DHCP external address, configured a DynDNS account to update my host and ip address when it changes and created a 123reg account and linked my CNAMEs to my DynDNS account so it passes it back to the web server, with me so far?

My 123reg account should expire today and have been a little flakey when resolving my domain name so thought I could use DynDNS instead but am not sure what i need to register?

can any one help?

Thanks

If the domain expires today then if you want to keep your domain you must immediately renew that domain. You can't transfer it to DynDNS if it has expired. You'll want domain registration to transfer your domain.

If it is just the DNS hosting that's expiring then you'll just need Custom DNS. Simply follow the instructions on configuring your DNS hosting.

Once that's done just create a hostname in your domain and have your update client update that, instead of your old free DynDNS hostname.

As you let your domain name expire, one could think that you don't want to use your domain any longer at all, i.e. want to give it up. In this case you may be happy with the free DynDNS hostname, the one you already use. You are good to go then.
