General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi guys,

I've got a particular problem and I will explain it.

2 months ago (or so) I was setting up my Linksys router, so someone told me about dd-wrt. I wanted to try it and I installed it but I didn't know how to configure it, so here comes another guy telling me he can help me to configure it remotely.

We were mounting a home web server and everything was OK until we needed a domain. So he created a DynDNS account for creating a free domain (seals.gotdns.com) and pointed it to my router IP adress. I wanted him to point it to the server, (not to the server), so I actually lost my dynamic IP address and all the computers using the router can be accessed by a ssh http://seals.gotdns.com (obviously I disabled SSH on all computer until I can fix this) and all the network is tied to the domain.

I've already reinstalled OSs on all computers, I've also reflashed my router (including hard reset) but the domain is still working. I don't want to have that domain pointing to my router anymore. I can't ask the other guy to cancel the account because he's moving to another house and I don't know where is he, so I'm requesting a solution.

Deleting the domain or pointing it to the server would be fine, but I'm not sure if you can do that. I don't know if I can do something.

Thanks in advance, Daniel

So, do you have the username and password, or the email address, for the DynDNS account?

Yes - Log in, select your host and select the option to delete it. Approximately 60 seconds later your hostname will no longer resolve.
No - Wait about 35 days, at that point it will be automatically deleted since no update has been performed against the hostname

If you want to point it to the server then you need to configure port forwarding. Details of that can be found here.

Sorry, I didn't see your comment (this forum doesn't reliably notify about comments).

If you don't control the account then there isn't anything you can do, other than ensure you're not running any update client. Assuming you aren't, and assuming the account isn't a Pro account (which doesn't expire, but does cost money) then some 35 days after the last update the account and hostname will expire. Alternatively, email the person who controls the account.

If those options fail then forcing a change of the IP address of your router should do the trick (as long as you're not running any update client). To force a change the simplest option is usually to change the WAN MAC address of the router - details of how to do that should be in the manual. If you can't find details please update your question with the make, model and revision of the router and what version of DD-WRT if you're still running it.

Hi Cry,

I have only the email address, no idea about the password. It's not my account, someone else (with remote access to my router) created it and pointed it to my router.

Oh, yes, I tried with port forwarding and the server works properly, but the address is still pointing to the router, and I don't wan't that, because that's compromising my home newtork security.

Also, what do you mean with "no update against the hostname"?

Thanks :)

if your problem is that your router can been seen from outside, Linksys routers have an option that disables that (it only disables connections on the router from the internet not your lan). You will find the option somewhere in the admin page. Be aware that some linksys routers have a small problem and even if you disable this option the router 80 port will be still accessible from outside. If that happens your only option is either to masquerade port 80 of the router to another port like 34556 (so for someone to contact the router from the internet will have to contact 34556 port that will lead to port 80 of the router). Another option is to change the router ofc.

Disable remote web management in the router, should be an option, or forward/use another port other than 80 for http

What has that to do with the OP's question?
