Is there an alternative port available in case my ISP is redirecting all port 53 traffic to their own recursive DNS servers? Or is there another workaround? Or am I out of luck with using the Internet Guide then?

One indication of being redirected would be if http://setup.dynguide.com/ returned that I'm not using the Internet Guide, although I have configured the Internet Guide DNS server addresses 216.146.35.35 and 216.146.36.36 on the router, the computer, or as forwarders on my internal DNS server.

1 Answer:

If your ISP transparently redirects either port 53 (DNS) or port 80 (HTTP) to their own servers then your options are very limited.

The first thing to do is ask your ISP, though I've certainly found in the past that many front-desk support staff don't know that the ISP they work for even does this. Once you find somebody who knows what's happening you can ask whether it's possible to opt out.

If you can't opt out then your only options are to either change ISP or to investigate the use of a VPN service. With a VPN you'd be routing your traffic (all or some) through another end point not subject to your ISP's redirection. It will obviously cost you more money on top of your Internet connection - how much depends on the service and provider you chose.

Thanks, but still waiting for answer from staff, e.g. to say "Ok, you can query our resolvers also via ports xxxx and xxxxx", same as other DNS services do. If this is not available and will not become available, I will click the check mark. ;-) Btw, I would also have a solution at hand being able to use alternative ports...

I'm not aware of it being possible to run a DNS service on anything other than 53/UDP|TCP. Interested in links to such information.

E.g. OpenDNS does this. There resolvers also listen on port 5353. How to utilize this: http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=6182#Item_36
