General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi all, I'm trying to "see" my security cameras/DVR from any place. I tried several things but still not working. This is what I have:

  • Generic DVR (web-server built in) that can be accessed with no problem inside my private network.
  • FIOS Router Actiontec MI424-WR

  • I assigned a static IP to the DVR (192.168.1.254) - Port: 80

  • I have http://myFIOSip.dns.org (I made it up for the explanation)

  • I read that FIOS may block port 80, therefore, I plan to use port 1001 to access my DVR.

  • I create the following rule in the router:

Nework device: 192.168.1.254
Protocols: TCP 1001>80 / UDP 1001>80
WAN connection type: Any Status: Active

The syntax from the outside world would be http://myFIOSip.dns.org:1001

Well, long story short,IT DOESN'T WORK. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you

Generally, you don't choose which port the DVR is accessible on, it is already chosen for you by default. It is very easy to change that port in the DVR(not in the router), but you didn't specify that in your opening statement so I can only assume you are not aware of it. In the router, change your port from 1001 to 81. Go into the router, create 2 new forwarding rules and forward the following ports for TCP (Call it DVR1: TCP default port for DVR, call it DVR2: TCP port 81.) You will have to read the manual to find the default port for the DVR's network settings, it is different for every DVR make and model. You may also find the port by accessing your DVR's network menu...near where the DHCP settings are set.

ALSO-If you are using a cable acct as opposed to DSL, I have seen where you are not able to access the DVR regardless of what you do. If you are behind the firewall/router on the same network as the DVR, you may be blocked but as soon as you login to a different network, public or private, it will give you access. Something to do with the ISP....can't remember the explanation they gave me. What I did to circumvent the issue was to use my ATT acct on my iPad, or you can use logmein/VNC, etc to remote into another computer at a different location and test it from there, then login to the router to test connection or log directly into DVR. By using logmein, you are able to troubleshoot any issues because you are literally in 2 places at once. Call me if you need help, David

You need to set-up port inside DVR, example 1001. Go to router Port Forwarding and add 192.168.1.254 device and 1001 port in "Forwarding port:"

Try to reach device (DVR) from your WAN address: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1001

or from your dyndns address: http://myFIOSip.dns.org:1001

I hope it will help you..
