Dyndns has been configured on my Billion router and Dyndns Updater has been installed on my server. I can access the server via RDP on the local network but not from outside. I have configured port forwarding to forward port 3389 to my servers ip 192.168.137.1 . I'm still unable to connect.

Moved comments into body of question

  1. I'm currently running on a 3G connection on a ADSL/3G router.

  2. My appoligies Havok. I have moved the line to ADSL to make things easier. Now I get a ping reply from the dns address. But I'm still unable to connect remotely

  3. My router wan ip is 41.246.xx.xx, my host name resolves to the exact same ip. I dont have any other routers or network devices. The firewall has been turned off. NAT is enabled on my router, could that cause an issue

  4. Yes I have. Port 3389 is open, but 80 isn't. Do I need port 80 to be open?

The DNS servers ns X .mydyndns.org are for people using Custom DNS and Secondary DNS. If you're looking for a service that allows you to do DNS lookups without using your ISP's DNS server then you need to use either the Internet Guide DNS service (free) or Recursive DNS (paid for). If that isn't what you're trying to do please edit your question and be more specific about what you're trying to achieve.

You don't need to use any of these services to run Remote Desktop.

Historical Edits

  1. Do you also have an ADSL modem? Have you read the wiki entry covering port forwarding and testing?

  2. Ah, you're using 3G. What are the first 2 numbers of the WAN IP of your router - are they in the RFC1918 range that wiki entry mentions (I'm guessing they are)?

  3. What are the first 2 numbers of the WAN IP of your router? What are the first 2 numbers of the IP your hostname resolves to? Do you have any other routers?

  4. Have you tried any of the open port tools?

Edit

No, if you're trying to use a Remote Desktop client you only need 3389/TCP open. You are testing with a Remote Desktop client and not a web browser I hope?

Well, ping 127.0.0.1 doesn't prove anything at all. Better try with the LAN IP address of the terminal server computer from another (or the same) computer, if at all, because ping is not really the right tool to be used here. I would recommend to check your Windows event logs for any related message. I would expect there are some. For example, it could be that your terminal server is configured to not accept connections from IP addresses outside your LAN subnet.
