Hi guys, I have followed all the steps here http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/apple_airport_with_custom_dns.html religiously and seem to be getting some success as I can connect to my time capsule over the internet from a win 7 machine via the windows apple airport utility/File/Configure other, then I use my http://time-capsule.dyndnsboughtdomainname.com and the device password. The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to map or browse the hard disk inside the time capsule with windows 7/windows explorer. I use map network drive, then use other login.. then I put time-capsule.dyndnsboughtdomainname.comTime-Capsule.local (and I have tried with and without eveything after the .com and every time I get a network error from windows explorer) and the device password. Also, I have installed Bonjour (print services).. I'm stumped! I can see my full custom host name in the dyndns login and all the different dns entries too. Also, I can not connect when I use the correct dynamic IP of the internet connection I'm trying to reach. I also see that same IP next to my hostname in the http://dyndns.com login acc settings. Anyone that can shed some light on this would be really making my week! Thanks in advance |

You'd have to forward the CIFS (aka SMB) ports, however most sensible ISPs block those ports because they've also been used by lots of Windows worms over the years. If you want remote access as a file share you'd need to look to using a VPN or a different file sharing protocol.
No router? That's unusual but it does complicate things.
No, you'd need something else to VPN to - possibly a router with a built in VPN server.
The lack of a computer doesn't matter - if you have a router you still need to forward the relevant ports to connect to any service. This guide covers that and it might help you - if your ISP doesn't (sensibly) block the CIFS ports. Check the documentation for your router too and see if it can act as a VPN server. Thanks Cry! The time capsule just sits by itself on an open internet connection and has no computer attached, so I'm not sure how to forward a port (I know how to port forward but where do I forward it to?) or open it. I did try to forward the 445 TCP port for SMB but it said it was already configured since I ticked the share files over wan box. You said VPN, do you mean I should use a computer and VPN into that rather than a time capsule? I don't think I can VPN into a time capsule can I?

I have a router, the time capsule is the router, but there is no computer attached, just the time-capsule is sitting by itself on the Internet.

Hi - did you ever manage to resolve this as I've been struggling with the same thing? I have managed to achieve connection using FileBrowser app on iPhone by forwarding Port 445, so the basic settings on Time Capsule are correct, but I'm unable to access from pc via browser or drive mapping or FTP. I'm using TC as router and NAS and have tried various port mappings and syntax for mapping, very much as outlined in original post. Please ask your own question, then we can try to help you. Note that PC file sharing is usually blocked by ISPs so you shouldn't expect it to work.
