General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

What I am confused about is how dyndns knows which server should be used to copy the address to the domain name? I am wanting to use this to advertise my public webserver, but it is not staying up to date, even though the address of the host with my router is up to date.

I am wondering whether doing a CNAME to that host would work or if its even a valid approach?

This is based on the instructions here: http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/apple_airport_with_custom_dns.html

1 Answer:

Sorry, not an Apple expert, but DynDNS knows your IP address, because you have to tell it by using any sort of Update Client within the same network where your services are, e.g. your Apple router.

"*The AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express and Time Capsule devices do NOT use the DynDNS HTTP Update API [IETF Draft] to dynamically update DNS servers. Instead, these devices use the DNS Update [RFC 2136] protocol combined with TSIG security [RFC 2845]... Once your setup is complete, your global dynamic hostname will start updating at http://DynDNS.com.*"

it is not staying up to date, even though the address of the host with my router is up to date.

What could this mean? Either it is up to date, and then it is the same, or it is not the same, so it's not up to date...

I am wondering whether doing a CNAME to that host would work or if its even a valid approach?

This is a different topic, and yes, a CNAME works and can be a valid approach, but not to solve an issue with an incorrectly or not updated IP address at DynDNS.
