General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi,

Sorry about the silly question. I tried reading your documents but don't quite understand.

I have a Web Cam for home security. Unfortunately, my ISP does NOT provide SMTP without SSL. I cannot use Gmail SMTP as it requires SSL. If I subscribe to your SMTP service, how do I go about setting up? Is SSL required? Do I need to leave a PC on all day?

BTW I'm using your DNS and Domain service to track my IP address and it works very well for the Web Cams.

Many thanks.

Jonathan

From reading the documentation it looks like Dyn Standard SMTP (previously MailHop Outbound) doesn't require SSL/TLS, though it is recommended. There are setup instructions and general settings - the latter is probably what you're after.

Thanks. I read the setup instructions and really don't understand. Is it just a matter of subscribing to SMTP, then just setting the SMTP to say http://smtp.dyndns.org with my login name and password? As mentioned, this just for my home cam. Just need email in case of movement in certain predefined zone.

Pretty much, though it's outbound.mailhop.org (do please read the documentation). Exactly what you set depends on what the camera is - it's manual should help you identify what settings are supported. If you can provide a link to the a PDF of the manual we may be able to help further.

Edit

The settings are:

SMTP Mail Server: outbound.mailhop.org
Port: 25 or 2525 or 10025
Authentication: Ticked
Account Name: Your http://DynDNS.com account name - not the email address
Password: Your http://DynDNS.com account password

Just bought SMTP service and configured as per instructions for my CISCO WVC210 web cam. Unfortunately could not send mail via SMTP. Says connection error. Tried all the different ports. Unfortunately the cam does NOT support SSL. What can I do differently? Many thanks.

Try using something that provides more logging, or even just telnet to ensure you can connect. Unfortunately without more information we can't help you identify whether the problem is with your camera or elsewhere.

Unknown SMTP server

Sounds like a problem with the DNS Settings of your camera. Is it configured with a functional DNS server IP (ideally more than one) and is it's netmask and default gateway correctly set? Generally the netmask will be 255.255.255.0 or /24 and the default gateway should share the first 3 sets of numbers with the camera's IP address and will be the router's LAN IP.

Thanks for your response. As mentioned, it was working fine with http://Mail.Com with current settings. The subnet mask, default gateway, DNS have all be setup previously. Is there anything else I can do?

I'd re-check that there isn't a typo in the settings, particularly the server name.

Note sure if this helps. This is from the cam log:

03/28/2012 14:02:53 SMTP: Unknown SMTP server [host: http://outbound.mailhop.org]. 03/28/2012 14:01:51 Alert: Detected motion.

Here are the settings I'm using with the cam:

MailPrimary SMTP Server Enable Primary SMTP

SMTP Mail Server: http://outbound.mailhop.org (Outgoing Mail Server)
Port: 10025 (have tried 25, 2525)

My Mail Server Requires Authentication

Account Name: My DNS login Password: My DNS password

Dumb question ... how do I use Telnet? Sorry for the n00b question.

Many thanks.

Previously I was using http://Mail.Com. The settings were:

http://smtp.mail.com Port: 25 My http://mail.com login My http://mail.com password

Unfortunately they made it a premium service recently and I would rather pay Dyn. But if I can't get this to work, may have to stay with http://Mail.Com
