I have a "Bunker Hill" DVR surveillance system hooked to a 2wire DSL modem/router. I have it all working perfectly.. all the ports forwarded and have created a dnydns host name. The DVR has a drop down menu that shows the option for DYNDNS to be the DNS server, I've chosen that, it has a box for typing in my username (for DYNDNS) which I've entered corectly, it has a place for the DYNDNS password which I've entered correctly and it also has a place to enter the hostname which I THINK I've entered correctly. I entered "xxxxxxx.dyndns-remote.com" with all the the x's being what my username is.. is this correct?? My AT&T DSL account is dynamic and whenever AT&T changes the IP address I can't log in remotely anymore since my dyndns still "points" to the old IP address. I then have to go to the DVR location and using my laptop connect to the internet and then log into my DYNDNS accout and update the current IP. It then will work. I have been racking my brains trying to get this to work like it SHOULD but it doesn't seem to update when the IP changes. Is my hostname correct? The modem doesn't have an update client so I'm stuck with the DVR updater since there is NO computer at that location unless I go there and connect with my laptop.. so.. I have to get this working.. please help!! |

Hello nitroaa, When you created an account on the DynDNS website and selected a hostname; that will be the hostname that should be entered in the hostname field of the router. Then if all works well except the update process (have you have indicted) then I would think the update client in the router is broken. You can check here to see if your router is one of the known to be broken. You may wish to download a software update client and run it to see it will work for you. regards... |

You have 3 choices:
You may find this list of known functional devices useful.
Yes. You're also entering your username, not your email address?
Many hardware devices have badly behaved update clients, regardless of whether they're new or old. Indeed, it seems that few manufacturers implement a well behaved one, which is why lists such as that one exist. I would suggest that you consult that list and see if you can buy or borrow a device listed there (just note that most routers will update with the IP of their WAN interface, so you should look for a DSL modem or router). Edit
That is perfectly normal and how many devices behave. Many expect that they are directly connected to your Internet connection. That's why I've been recommending you replace your DSL modem/router ;) Had to add the missing http:// here too, as the links didn't work without. Something might have changed with the forum software...

Thanks Cry, I've been thinking that it is the DVR's updater that's not working.. but couldn't find any way to prove it.. other than it's not updating.. lol.. I also recently connected a Vonage phone "router" (any info about that?) to the DSL modem/router and it has a built in DNS updater in it too. I entered in my host name and username and password but it also doesn't appear to be working. When entering the host name I do NOT use "WWW" or any prefixes correct? My dyndns host name is http://xxxxxx.dyndns-remote.com is this EXACTLY what I would enter in as the hostname/domain? I just don't get it why the Vonage isn't working either since it's brand new and appears to have a decent updater.. that's why I keep asking about what exactly should be entered into the updater as far as the hostname. Thanks for your fast reply! Hopefully I can get this thing to update my IP so I don't have to keep going there constantly to update in manually. |

I FINALLY got the DNS updater that's built into the Vonage phone adapter to update.. but.. it sent the local IP for the Vonage adapter and not the modem's new IP address which I'm not even positive has changed since this network is all at my garage (surveillance DVR with 'bad' updater in firmware) and I haven't gone there yet. All I know is that my IP address was changed (according to my host log on http://dyndns.com) to 192.168.1.65 which I know is the Vonage local network IP. Here's the actual log: Aug-21 07:00:13 hostname=xxxxxxx.dyndns-remote.com (I "x'd out" the username for privacy reasons on here) myip=192.168.1.65 system=dyndns wildcard=OFF BRCMClient/1.0 twhite@broadcom.com good 192.168.1.65 I'm SO glad that the updater finally did send something since my log on dyndns has been blank since I set all this up last week.. so.. at least it IS "working" now.. but.. not sending the correct IP. Is there a way to get it to send the modem's IP? Here's a link to the Vonage manual .. scroll down to the "network options" section. https://support.vonage.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/757/~/vonage-v-portal-web-user-interface#12 I can't see anything that I can chanhge it. The Vonage adpater/router has the "WAN Blocking" checked and when I uncheck it and hit apply it just goes back to being checked again. I don't know is that must be checked or not but it SEEMS like it should be. Thanks in advance for any info/help on this. :-D |
