General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi all,

I've been reading through several threads on the forum to get an idea of how to set up two cameras to be viewed through http://Dyndns.org. Here's my particular situation:

  • Two DCS-930L cameras with DHCP assigned IP's from a 2Wire Gateway router that does NOT support port forwarding.
  • Each camera has wireless access to the router via viewing the control panel of each camera through it's DHCP address

Here's where I'm a little unsure of what to do next:

  • The DLink-930L has a 'Dynamic DNS' section, where it reads: "The Dynamic DNS feature allows you to host a server (Web, FTP, Camera, etc...) using a domain name that you have purchased (www.whateveryournameis.com) from your broadband Internet Service Provider (ISP). Using a DDNS service, your friends can enter your host name to connect to your IP Camera regardless of your IP address."
  • The fields it has available are: Server Address, Host Name, Username, Password, Timeout
  • Question: Do I need to put in any related http://dyndns.org information about the account that I've set up in this section, or do I leave it blank?

Here's the other aspect that I'm not sure of. A lot of people have mentioned that their port is 8080, 8081, etc for their dyndns domain, but I didn't see an area when setting up to specify that particular port. It the port number something you include in the dyndns domain that you originally registered for? (i.e. (submittedname).dyndns.org(specify port here)?

If that's the case, and I don't have port forwarding enabled on my router... I'm assuming I need to assign the listening port directly on my camera (under Network Setup -> Port Settings). In other words, Camera #1 would be assigned port 8080 for a http://dyndns.org address of (nameserver).dyndns.org:8080, and Camera #2 would be assigned port 8081 for a http://dyndns.org address of (nameserver).dyndns.org:8081... and all should be well.

Let me know if the above assumptions are right, and if you can answer any of the questions above. :)

Much appreciated in advance!

Yours, Spider

If your router does not support port forwarding then you need to replace your router with one that does.

Once you've solved that problem, this guide should help you. In particular you'd configure your update client with (probably):

Server Address: members.dyndns.org
Host Name: Your http://DynDNS.org hostname
Username: Your http://DynDNS.org username - not the email address
Password: Your http://DynDNS.org password

The ports are those you chose when you complete your port forwarding.

Well it looks like I can answer my own questions above after a little bit of experimenting. :) Essentially...

  • Don't fool with the Dynamic DNS section on the camera
  • Specify port when you type in the URL. You could just have to indicate the port on the camera to broadcast from (8080).

Also, since most ISP's seem to block port 80, I went ahead and used port 8080,8081 for both cameras, and things are great. This also works if you have the ability to put the camera into a DMZ zone outside of the firewall (though it's a little risky, it helped initially with verifying my setup before hardening it up behind the firewall).

Hope that helps some other soul who was experiencing the same problems I was!
