So I apologize for being a DNS noob, but I don't understand how to activate the Secondary DNS service that DynDNS has.

Do I have to do anything in particular with bind? Should I be adding anything particular to /etc/bind/example.com.hosts?

According to the service description:

The Secondary DNS service provides redundant name service for a domain that you own and whose DNS you manage on your own nameserver(s).

So, is this the service you're looking for, because you manage your own nameservers? Then simply follow this HowTo, especially steps 3 and 4, where changes to your masterserver are lined out.

Hmm, yes... a bit unfortunate that the link doesn't work... I was hoping it held the answer I was looking for too. :(

If you were to ask your own question we might be able to help you.

The How-To isn't there, is there a new URL for it? Thanks!

I can't see it, you may want to contact DynDNS and ask them what's happened to it.

Just today I got an email from:

Jason Ku

Dyn Concierge

...who answers:

There are no instructions on our site for configuring your server to be used with secondary dns.

...which I find kind of interesting to say the least. As I said in my reply (paraphrasing), so you want your customers to GUESS how to use your services. As an afterthought, for their lack of...Idunno...expertise? (no, not really, they ARE pretty sharp)...experience? (well, not that either, really)...I'm supposed to go against best common practices and allow zone xfers from anywhere, and just hope for the best? hmmmm....

I recently had to update mine, and did mine from memory, that one should (for BIND) allow-xfer from the addresses for ns2 through ns5 .mydyndns.org. The trouble was, I was seeing requests for zone transfers from other than that list, which is why I came here. I'd actually like to hear what the Dyn braintrust has to say about WHY they took that information down. I'll try to remember to post another update here after they reply.

To anwser the original poster more thoroughly though, yes, you should add NS records to your zone, POSSIBLY (unconfirmed) for ns2 through ns5. You should be sure you're allowing zone transfers from same, or everywhere (although I don't recommend the latter).

We can only support our dns services. Set up on your system is not something we can help with since the device is not ours.

Yep. I understand that. Sorry, I wasn't concise enough; what I really meant to ask is some generic instructions (such as Cry Havok has found, courtesy of The Internet Archive Wayback Machine).

If you need our IP addresses for our name servers they are listed here..

http://dyn.com/support/how-do-i-delegate-my-domain/

So there we go...delegation instructions, which is pretty much most of it. (The only thing that's missing is the idea of letting your nameserver allow zone transfers from ns2 through ns5).
