Have set up remote IP cameras successfully, but learned the hard way about dynamic IP addresses as I lost the connection to my router shortly thereafter when the external IP address changed. I have it up again with the new IP address, but my Westell router does not appear to have a client updater configuration (or at least I can't find it), so I've just installed the dyn mac client updater software, which is recommended anyway. Fine, but I feel like I'm just waiting for router the connection to fail again when the address changes because I'm unclear how the dyn update client software can connect to my router if it "checks periodically" for the new address. How does it connect with the router if the address has already changed ? My hope is that the answer is that the software is always connected with the external IP address (real time) so it knows the new address as it changes. In other words, once installed, does it work its magic automatically, or do I still need to configure my router to forward yet something else. (keeping in mind my cameras are fully operational now). Thanks ! |

The update software doesn't connect to your router. Every 10 minutes it checks the IP reported by In other words, it works fully automatically.
Yes - the update client must be installed on the network you want to connect to, the one that the hostname has to resolve to. The descrption on DynDNS's update client page says:
There are also a list of software and routers known to work, and a list of those known to be broken, that you may want to consider using those - remembering that it must be on the network that the hostname needs to resolve to. Edit
Or replace your router with one known to work. That will be your simplest solution - which is why I linked to those 2 lists of known working, and known broken, devices. |

Thanks for answering quickly. Yes, I should have said the IP is checked. Unfortunately the attached devices (router and cameras) are now unreachable, so I didn't wait long. I could see how checking the IP every ten minutes would work locally, but I'm remote and the software is installed on a remote desktop, so I'm still unclear how the software could check the external IP in the first place. Thinking about it a bit more I suppose it is designed to be installed on local hardware. If so, then I guess my only hope is to figure out how to configure the router to update or get a static IP address. |

I have the following problem and it may be a related issue. Question which westell router do you have and did you find out how to access it's update client? I have set up my DYNDNS service at one location using a Westell router (no computer at this location) but if I change locations the ip address changes to my current location preventing me from accessing my security system. I have manually changed the ip address back to a previous address obtained from my update log and the access is restored. How do I stop the service from updating to my current ip address and only change the ip address at my remote location if or when it changes? Simple - run the client at that remote location only. If you need further help, please ask your own question and then we can help you.

OK Thanks for the answers. I do not have a computer at the remote location (where the cameras are), only a router, so I guess there is no way to install the update client software there to use the local network to update the IP. It sounds like my options are to get a static IP or figure out how to configure my router to send the updates to my dyndns account.
