General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I have downloaded Plex for my Mac Mini and am attempting to set up media server with internet access.

I have registered a domain with Dyndns (not sure I needed to) and paid for this. This host is appearing in my dashboard widget as "inactive"

I believe I have set up port forwarding correctly, but am not sure! Do I need to check / change anything?

I have registered a hostname and selected one of the domains from the drop down list and received a "successfully activated" response but this host is not appearing in my dashboard widget.

As you can see, I am a complete novice in this - any help would be appreciated. Regards, John

It seems you need to work through this guide.

And no, you did not necessarily have to register an own domain name, because the selection from the drop-down list of dynamic DNS hostnames would have been sufficient. If you want to use your own domain name, domain registration is not enough, because you also need a DNS hosting service like Dyn Standard DNS for your domain. Without DNS hosting you can't use your domain name.

Regarding your dynamic DNS hostname not appearing on the hosts status page could indicate that you didn't check it out from the Shopping Cart, or you didn't activate the service. Whatever, check again for your hostname here. If you can't find it anywhere, you most likely didn't complete the process by mistake, so simply create it from anew.

Edit:

However, it is showing as inactive on my dashboard widget and I am assuming that is because I have not been able to create the path through my router to my Macmini

No, this cannot be the reason. To be honest, I've never heard or seen a dynamic DNS hostname being marked as 'inactive'. Could it be that you selected 'Offline Host', or 'Host with IP address', but didn't assign an IP address?

Thanks, I thought I may have been purchasing something I didn't need!

I completed the activation process and my dynamic DNS hostname is appearing on the hosts status page. However, it is showing as inactive on my dashboard widget and I am assuming that is because I have not been able to create the path through my router to my Macmini - I am still working on this and will follow the recommended guide.

Cheers, John
