General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Dear Support,

I have to setup a Static public IP for my client in order to run his exchange for email etc. My hosting company does not offer Static IP's. I was hoping that I would be able to sort this out with Dyn here.

My MX records for the email on the hosted side can only be an IP no.

Anyone here with advice please. I'm on the 14 day trial and have to cancel it if this is not possible.

Regards

1 Answer:

Only your network provider/ISP can provide a static IP, nobody else can. It is very unusual for a professional hosting provider not to offer a static IP. Indeed, if you don't have a static IP then you may find that recipients mail servers refuse email from you.

Also, MX records must be a hostname. They cannot be an IP address - doing so breaks the RFCs and is likely to cause you significant problems.

What you can do however is use either a Dynamic DNS hostname, or a hostname in the client's domain with Standard DNS, and have it updated with an update client as the WAN IP changes. That hostname would then be the MX record for the domain.
