Hello everyone, I just signed up for the standard Dns service @ $30.00 per year. I want to first admit that I don't have a good understand of DNS to begin with. I purchased this service to achieve a goal, if someone could please respond and let me know that I am on the right track and will be able to do what I wish to do. I own a domain name registered via 1&1, for conversation sake we will call it processsolutions.net. I have 35/35 mbps Verizon fios service and I have setup the dynamic dns updating in my router. I have also logged into 1&1 and changed the DNS record to use NS1-NS4.mydyndns.org. Behind the router I have a Dell PowerEdge server running VMWare ESXI and 2 VMHost running Windows Server 2008 for the purpose of running..(SQL Server 2008 R2, and Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010). Right now my developers and I use sub domains setup via 1&1 to access the SQL server and TFS server. When using Visual Studio you have to configure the TFS server to use, the huge pain point for us that when Verizon decides to change my IP address I have to sign back into 1&1 to change the DNS for the subdomains and update the IP which can sometimes takes up to 24 hours to update. My goal with the decision to move to the Standard Dyn Service is to be able to create for instance... tfs.processsolutions.net, have my developers configure this in Visual Studio and anytime verizon changes my IP address that my router will update the destination address for tfs.processsolutions.net automatically. I would prefer to not use one of the dyndns vanity domain names to obtain this goal, I don't want to use something like processsolutionstfs.mydyndns.org. Thanks in advance, I hope that this message clearly explains what I am trying to do. Thanks, Patrick Shaffer |

Yes, fine. You seem to have already a good understanding of this. So my question: can you edit your message to enhance it with what still does not work? From your description I can see one weak point:
Why would you do this at all? You said:
so there should be no IP addresses (A records) remaining at the registrar's site, especially no subdomain records, just NS (glue) records for the zone itself. Everything else should be maintained within Standard DNS, subdomains and their DNS records, including the DDNS updates when your IP address changes. What else would you need Standard DNS for then? |

What domain did you purchase Standard DNS for? I'm not seeing Dyn's name servers responding for either I suspect you haven't actually delegated your domain, since you need to do that at your domain registrar, not your web host. Once you've done that, and you've created It is in no way useful to hide your domain with a real domain somebody else owns. If you want to hide it, please use Your domain registration shows that your DNS servers are Dyn's. Doing a DNS query against your domain is using Dyn's servers, so the delegation is complete and working. Next:
"you need to do that at your domain registrar, not your web host." 1&1 are everything, registrar, web hoster, ISP, phone provider, IPTV provider, and more. I have some domains registered there too, and it is no problem to delegate domains at any time.

I was giving an exmaple, my domain is http://mindworkssolutions.net. I seen other posts not giving thier domain name so I followed that pattern. I updated to the dyndns name servers Saturday at about 6PM but it still says 1&1. RolBlitz: When I mentioned that I had to sign into 1&1 to update the sub-domain I was explaining what I did before moving to DynDns. I wanted to give all the details possiable of what I was attempting to achieve, then at the end ask if it was possiable. Thank you for the responses. So it is possiable for me to create http://tfs.mindworkssolutions.net pointed to my IP address and using the dynamic dns feature of my action tec router it will change this automatically with o downtime? The main reason for this post.. My buddy uses the free DynDns account and told me I had to use one of the vanity domains to get what I wanted and that I wasted my money. When I made the statement that I don;t really understand DNS.. I mean the details... CNAME vs A, and all the other items in that list. All I want to be able to do is point http://tfs.mindworkssolutions.net to my router and not have to worry with it. |

On 1&1, under domains you see the summary of the domains that you own. It has been (updating) for over 48 hours now. I called 1&1 and they opened a ticket Name Type Dest Regist Status Auto Renewal RenewalDate http://mindworkssolutions.net(DNS) Domain Web space(/.) Public updating on 10/30/2012 |
