General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi,

I've recently bought a pro account, and I'm having problems with the host names I'm using. They're all standard host names which link dynamic IP's to static hostnames.

The setup I have is each hostname is linked to a standard home router (netgear, bt homehub etc.) The routers are configured to use DDNS and update the hsotnames with the latest IP.

The problem I'm having is that some of the routers dont always update the hostname properly. I've checked the account name, hostname, domain name and password config on the router and its definately correct.

When I set up the router I set the ddns settings, check the ip, restart the router, check the ip again and when it changes I check to make sure the hostname works, which it does. But a couple of days / weeks later it stops updating the IP (looking at the 'last update' section in my dyndns account).

Is there any reason why the routers would stop updating? The configuration has definately not been chnaged in the router.

Could it be the TTL?

Hope this makes sense !

Josh

Hello lizardthing,

Not all router update clients behave properly when dealing with DynDNS.

Here is a list of known to work clients; and a list of known NOT to work clients.

You have indicated that these routers all updated successfully when first setup.

If you have a router which is setup correctly but not updating properly then your options are:

  1. Try upgrading to the most current, or know working, version of the router firmware.
  2. Get a router that is known to work.
  3. Run an update client (hardware or software) on another device on that network.

Ok thanks ! I'll look into updating the firmware.

Problem is the netwoks the hostnames are linking to don't always have active computers / servers. The hostname is needed for CCTV (DVR), although the DVR does have DNS capability. Do you have a list of known working DVRs ?

Cheers, Josh

No, only what has been compiled in that thread.

Sorry...
