Hi all, Need your expert help to set up WAN ddns for USB DISK access on Asus rt-n56u via ADSL model connection

My Setup:

I am connected to internet via Airtel ADSL using

  1. Zyxel (P-660HW-T1 v3) adsl modem + wifi router (ssid - net1- 192.168.1.1) (gets Dynamic global IP every time router restarts)
  2. Asus rt-n56u (ssid - net2-192.168.2.1) is connected to zyxel with WAN Connection type set to "Automatic IP"

What works:

i am able to switch between the ssid's on both routers when needed and surf the net without any issues with this setup. Also the USB NAS functionality works perfectly (have a 1tb hard drive connected to the Asus router) i have setup a subdomain "jags" with http://asuscomm.com server within WAN DDNS settings page of router configuration. When in LAN i can access my harddrive from 1. Windows explorer as a mounted drive -AIDisk_a1 2. Via web browser (FTP) using the ip 192.168.2.1 or http://jags.asuscomm.com

What does not work/ Objective:

From WAN i.e. outside of my network i am unable to access the files in the USB hard drive connected to asus rt-n56u router which has the several DDNS service embedded in router. The WAN IP on the asus router shows ip as 192.168.1.38 which it has picked from zyxel router dynamically

the error i see on WAN-DDNS page is similar to what the below web page shows

http://event.asus.com/2009/networks/dummy_ui/en/Advanced_ASUSDDNS_Content.html

"The wireless router currently uses a private WAN IP address (192.168.x.x, 10,x,x,x, or 172.16.x.x). This router may be in the multiple-NAT environment and DDNS service cannot work in this environment."

i even tried with older firmwares versions - currently its 1.0.1.8b i.e. the latest

i am stuck at this stage and have no clue what needs to be done for accessing the USB Disk from WAN. i have read and check many sites but were not of use i found a dedicated blog on asus ddns configuration and many nice guides but did not have any info specific to my setup.

http://www.dyndnscommunity.com/questions/10636/dynamic-dns-through-wireless-modem-and-wireless-ro.html

some research has led me to know that my asus router should pick up the dynamic ip given by airtel and picked by zyxel router instead of the local ip from zyxel router and could not figure out how to configure that

please help.

Hello jagdish,

The zyxel is issuing a private IP to the Asus. Most people put would put the zyxel into bridge mode, thus passing the public WAN IP to the asus. But I'm not familiar with the zyxel, and therefore don't know how bridge mode affects the wifi function of that device. But you are definitely double-NATing, which will not work.

This Guide may help with your situation. Work through it and post back and edit your question with any further issues. Don't forget to include the requested information at the bottom of the Guide.

Hope this helps.

regards...

Hello Jagdish,

Its a known that dynamic DNS concept will not work on dual natting. Hence, please have a look on this clip which should help you know what should be done next. "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t56Sl8coVFw"
