General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Ok I'm very frustrated. I've had this hostname for a while now and it isn't even available at dyndns anymore for me to attempt to reregister it.

http://intelligence.doesntexist.com

I use this on a daily basis, and I know it's impossible for it to have expired due to inactivity because I have it set up in an auto updater that updates it every 15 minutes.

DynDns has apparently simply deleted that hostname as well as 2 others that I had on my free account, without any warning. I would've emailed support but apparently you can't even do that without a paid account now. So what is this yet another stab of dyndns being greedy trying to force me into a paid account by deleting my host names?

A company that does stuff like this would never get my paid business even if I had need of your paid services.

Does anyone know if there is anyway for me to get my host name back?

That should have resulted in an abuse block on your hostnames, stopping you updating it (and hence it expiring).

In general, if you believe that your hostnames have been removed despite being updated within the last 30 days (and ideally you have a log entry showing a successful update) you should email Mike, who's email is listed on his profile page. There's no guarantee that Mike will be able to do anything, but based on his posts to others he's doing what he can.

What he said.

We do not delete host names for no good reason, and you would have been sent an email from us stating that it is about to expire (you receiving it or it not going to your spam folder is a different matter and that is something we are constantly working on).

Please note that the definition of activity is an update with a change in IP and/or manually logging into your account via http://account.dyn.com at least once every 30 days. Having an update client updating at a rate of 1/15 minutes is fine, so long as the IP address is changing. Otherwise, there is a likely chance that it will be blocked for abusive updates.

Recent changes have caused us to transition from free accounts to 14-day Pro trials, which will give you a free host name to use if you choose to cancel your trial. This change was made because of a need for us (Dyn) to provide a more secure network, while maintaining its integrity.

If you have logs, please email them to me along with your username so I can take a look into things. This goes for both Steven6262 and TuanKanh (and anyone reading this that is fuming beyond belief because the same damn thing happened to you).

Hi Mike. I tried to find an email or private way to message you, but I cannot. My host name was suddenly deleted for no reason. I never got the renewal email and I have checked my regular inbox and my spam inbox. I would be happy to email or message the name to you. My family currently uses it to keep an eye on my grandma through a webcam. We really need this restored. Please help. Thank you.

you should ask your own question. but... look at the top of the home page for the community. And my grandmother is worth the price of DynDNS Pro so that I won't run the risk of the free account renew being missed for ANY reason.

Hope you get it sorted

I'm sorry, in frustration I didn't check everything and have posted some misinformation.

I meant 15 days not 15 minutes, but turns out it's actually set to 10 days not 15 anyway.

But DynDns isn't at fault here, although I did not receive an email from them which is still annoying (I checked my spam folder and everything, there is no email from dyndns in the past 90 days). Upon further checking, apparently my router thinks the date is March 3rd 1970. And the DynDNS updater on my router has the last force update time saved as October 8th 2011. So it doesn't think it's been 10 days since the last update yet. My last router reboot was 61 days ago, so I'm guessing the reboot caused an update, then after 30 days passed it was flagged as inactive, and another 30 days (yesterday) resulted in the dns record being deleted.

Not sure why my routers date is wrong since I have it set to update through NTP against http://us.pool.ntp.org. The weird thing is some things in the router firmware have the correct date, but telneting into the linux prompt and using the date command is what shows the incorrect date.

I hate losing that domain because I really liked it, but since dyndns isn't at fault I guess it's just my loss. Although, I think it would be better for everyone if DynDNS implemented a dns log check to see if the dns host has been queried within the last 30 days as their activity check rather than an unneeded login and IP update if the IP address has not changed. I mean if the dns host gets queried, it's obviously being actively used.

I appreciate the information concenring the free trial, but I'm not going to risk losing another domain because I didn't receive an email and log in in time. I'll instead use a subdomain on one of the domains that I have registered personally to point to my IP address. It will be a neusance if my IP changes that I'll have to manually go update the DNS entry since I'm not hosting the DNS servers myself, but I can write some kind of script to email me if my external IP changes at home in order to remind me.

I'm having exactly the same issue, but my router is still reporting successful IP updates. My IP doesn't change terribly often, but it does whenever there is a power outage or my router for any other reason loses connection. Today I discovered that my domain that I have used for many years has expired without a single email from dyndns (although in the past I have received well over a dozen emails from dyndns). I had renewed my domain (ninj4.homeip.net) as recently as January 5 through an email, but today discovered the domain to be gone.

@mtaylor: I would have emailed you, but I have no logs (my router is a linksys with firmware Firmware Version: v4.30.5 and as far as I know does not keep logs), and your email address is not listed in your community profile.
