General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi, I have a domain registered and Dyn Standard DNS Service. I have a webserver set up at say (for example) 22.181.284.20:5050. Using a webhop I can get there, but the browser url does not show my http://www.mydomain.com, instead it shows the ip and port. How can make it show the domain, and show subfolders as http://www.mydomain.com/subfolder.

I saw some posts about using a custom dns to achieve this, but couldn't figure out how to set that up. If someone could walk me though it I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Note that mydomain.com is a real domain, owned by somebody else. Please use example.com.

The answer is complex, though Scarabaeus has already provided all the components.

  1. Create example.com as a Host with IP address of 22.181.284.20. If necessary, configure an update client to keep it updated.
  2. Create www.example.com as a WebHop to http://example.com:5050/.

Now in the browser the hostname (example.com) and the port will be visible. There is no way around this if you want to use a port other than port 80 and have the path displayed. There is no service available, from any provider, that I'm aware of that can cloak the port and display the path.

Thanks, that answers my question.

Hello FredBowman,

Custom DNS is an older name for the present DynStandard DNS Service.

I believe you need to use the cloaking option on the webhop. But it will not provide the subdirectory tracking in the displayed URL as you have described.

Review Dyn’s webhop and redirection options, and what they do. This should give you a clearer picture of what is possible.

Hope this helps.

regards…

Thanks for you answer! I guess my follow up question is how can I achieve what I am looking to do? Whether I have to buy more services from dyndns or go to a different provider, or something else? Every site on the web uses a domain/subfolder, so I image there must be a way to do it whether through dyndns or another provider.
