General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I've searched for all of these questions and it got... confusing.

Questions:

  • Say I have http://test.com, and want to run a service at port 1337, can I use a sub domain to connect to a port? e.g. http://leet.test.com = 123.456.789.101:1337 ?

  • And if I buy the DynDNS Custom can I have more than 1 domain? e.g. http://test.com, http://test1.com etc.. Or do I need to pay per domain?

  • If I do have a static IP does this still work? Do I still need the client? And do I need to run the client every 30 days?

So I summon the powers of the interwebs to answer my questions!!!1!

1 Answer:
  • DNS simply resolves hostnames to IP addresses, ports are not involved. That is why most protocols have a default port (eg 80 for HTTP, 25 for SMTP etc). That said if you're using HTTP you can use WebHop to perform a redirection.
  • You have to buy one Custom DNS per domain.
  • Yes it still works, you don't need a client but if you're not using Custom DNS you'll want the Dynamic DNS Pro service.
