I successfully registered port 5900 for my first laptop to control from a remote location. Now I want to add the rest of my computers. It seems that I cannot put them on the same port "5900" because there is no way to distinguish them. They all have static ip. What is the next step? Can I assign any random port for vnc or is there a specific range? |

And remember that you would need to specify the port number on the client you're connecting from as well. I'm not at all familiar with modern Apple products, but with VNC you often have the option of specifying a "display number". The display number is pretty much a simplified way to specify the port number. If you are using "display number" 1, it uses port number 5901 (5900 + 1), display number 2 equals port number 5902 (5900 + 2), etc. To connect to |

VNC ports are normally in the range starting 5900. So for your second host use 5901, for the third 5902 and so on. I tried, but it seems no other port works but 5900. I even tried port 3283. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that I am using a mac running osx 10.6.3?

Note that comment notification isn't reliable, even when it works it only notifies the poster of the answer you're commenting on. This means that most of the time nobody will know you commented. It is better to edit your question or add an answer. You need to ensure that these other hosts are configured to use the non-default port (either in addition, or as the only port) or that your router can forward to a different port (eg forward 5901 to 5900). |
