I'm trying to use DynDNS to sync my work computer IP so I can remote into it from home. The computer is behind a firewall, so all internet requests need to go through a proxy server. I don't see a way to configure this in the Windows Updater client. Is there a way to do it? Or is there a different client (a command line version maybe) that will do it? FWIW, here are the log entries: 06-24-2010 10:56:21 - WINHTTP: Connection to the server failed. 06-24-2010 10:56:24 - GetHostList: WinHttpSendRequest failed. Unable to send the request to the HTTP server. Note: I have a VPN client to get me inside the firewall. Once connected, I can then access my work computer, as long as I know the IP address. Currently I've been simply doing cmd ipconfig to find out the IP and copy it into an online notepad that I can access from home. However, this is prone to breaking when my IP is reassigned. |

Independent from whether you ever will become able to remote into your work network, which you did not really ask for, you probably expect to have answered the question you asked: "...through a proxy server. I don't see a way to configure this in the Windows Updater client. Is there a way to do it?" You're probably using the DynDNS update client v4. No, you can't do it with this, you had to go back/forward to the more advanced v3, where you can configure the same proxy server, which is defined in your browser. However, still no warranty that it works at all, but worth a try... Thank you much RotBlitz. The v3 client is just what I needed. It was a little bit confusing, as the client wants to use the detected public IP rather than my computers private ID. I got around this by adding the public IP range to the list of unsuitable IDs.

Glad that I could help you to a certain extend, but really take into consideration the answers from VikingTiger and Cry Havok.

Success seems improbable in the scenario you're describing. How would you go about connecting inbound to your work computer? Are you part of the IT staff and have control over the firewall? A large corporation would not normally use NAT to translate packages to local server IPs, but rather have a separate DMZ for public servers. Regarding proxy servers, keep in mind that people would usually wish to not go through a proxy server, because then the proxy server's IP would be detected by checkip.dyndns.org (unless it provides some "Via" header which checkip can use instead). Is the work computer's IP a public IP or within a private IP series? Sorry, I failed to mention that I need to VPN first before I can access my work computer.

Short answer - you can't. If you need remote access then you need to be able to control the firewall to configure port forwarding. If you can't manage the firewall then you can't remote in (though you could use one of the web based services that provide you with a remote desktop via their web service). |
Sure. One example of such a service is TeamViewer, which (as far as I know, I've never used it) is free for personal use. This is merely an example, not a recommendation, provided in the interest of helping you get started. |

If you need to connect in via VPN, then the work computer will only be available from within the VPN connection, and a public DNS entry on the Internet seems both irrelevant and impractical. If the work computer is on a dynamic private IP, them I would expect there to be some kind of dynamic DNS within the corporate network. Regardless of how it seems to you, it is both relevant and practical to me. I need some way of knowing what my computer's IP address is so that when I do VPN in, I can RDC into it. Yes, there may be better ways to do this, but life is short, this works, and I'm moving on to other things.

My intention was not to offend you. My point was that your IT department probably had a simpler solution ready for you already (a local corporate DNS service), and that local DNS and public DNS are two separate things.
