I'm quite willing to purchase the service I need to do this, and I have a vague notion of what I need to do, but I need some advice on how to do this before I commit funds. I am hoping someone can verify that this is possible and tell me how I need to go about it, exactly. I already own a domain at http://www.144ridgewood.net and it is attached to a hosting service that I love. I want to maintain that hosting service, but send just my subdomain, http://home.144ridgewood.net to my dynamic IP location (home server). I can easily add an A record from my host's DNS Zone Editor to direct the subdomain http://home.144ridgewood.net to any IP address I care to add. So near as I can tell, all I really need is a DynDNS-owned IP address which will then forward to my dynamic IP address. (this is just a guess, mind you) I then go into my host's zone editor and set my subdomain to the DynDNS IP and I will end up with a fully resolved hostname on my home server equal to the subdomain http://home.144ridgewood.net So my question is, will signing up for Dynamic DNS Pro or Custom DNS allow me to specify a DynDNS owned IP that will resolve to my home IP? If not, is there another way to set up JUST my subdomain as a fully resolved hostname for the server attached to my DynDNS account while keeping the rest of my domain at it's current host? Thanks so much for your help! |

You have two options:
Either way, you must keep your DynDNS hostname or DynDNS zone A records updated with your public IP address information. Hmm, this is what I already have done, but when it gets to my end it resolves on the DynDNS domain name instead of my subdomain, so any service that requires a FQDN fails. What I need is for my subdomain "home.144ridgewood.net" to still show in the browser once it arrives at my end. That way I can make my iCal server work, which is the critical app for what I am doing. iCal server requires a fully quallified domean name that resolves to the server, not forwards. 8-(

Yeah, using a web hop redirector or adding a CNAME record breaks most of the services I need to use.

If you are unable to delegate a subdomain to DynDNS from the control panel on your current provider's site, it is still possible that this can be accomplished by contacting your provider and asking them to do it for you. If that is not at all possible, it may be possible to move the DNS for your entire root domain to DynDNS. If you do that, you will wish to re-create all hostnames for your web site and any MX records, in your DynDNS Custom zone. OK that could work, all I have to do is set the A Record to the IP of my existing host for all address except the subdomain that I want to go to my dynamic. In any case I'll gor the Custom DNS service and give it a shot.

Correct, but also remember any MX records for e-mail.

Note that comments are just that, comments. The person who's post you comment on may never know you commented. As such they shouldn't be used for adding to a question or providing information. You'll have to use Custom DNS for your domain or, as RotBlitz suggested, delegate thanks! And thanks for letting me know that... I am assuming then that once I get Custom DNS I will get an actual IP address that I can set up an A Record to point to from my subdomain? If so I'll be purchasing that service immediately.

thanks RotBlitz, I am going to try that now. I'll contact my hosting provider and see if I can delegate just my subdomain to DynDNS as that would indeed be the perfect solution. Then I can have the FQDN I need to make 70% of my services work properly. Several of the answers here I would gladly have voted up, but I don't have the points to do so. Did you get now enough points? ;-)

Got it, thanks! Scored the helpful ones and marked the most appropriate answer.

And again, comments do not have a reliable notification. Therefore better add a new answer as response. When purchasing DynDNS Custom, you will get a full maintainable DNS hosting service. You will never get an IP address from a DNS hosting service, only from your ISP. Therefore, as I said already, you must run an Update Client to inform your DynDNS Custom A record about your current IP address. And yes, once you keep your IP address information updated, your subdomain But before you can start, think about that you have to delegate at least your subdomain Oops, Cry Havok was quicker...
