Good Morning: I am trying to set up Apple Remote Desktop and control my home computer while I am away, out of my network. Some information about my two computers:
When I connect to my desktop from my laptop within my network, I am successful. ARD sees my computer and will allow me to take control of it with no problem. When I am outside of my network, I type in my IP address or my DynDns server name, and it sees my home computer and I see the words “Mac Pro” under the name and the proper IP address, but it will not connect. I get an error message: “Connection failed to ‘Mac Pro’” Can someone please shed some light on this? |

Have you worked through this guide? When you remotely connect, you say it shows the "proper IP address". Is that the LAN address or the WAN address? If it's the LAN address then that would explain the problem (and I'll expand on that if it is the case). How would I know if it's WAN or LAN? I'm inside my router and it just says IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Connection type is DHCP If it makes a difference, this is the ip address that my router is assigned from the outside world. My computer is assigned 192.168.1.4 from inside my router. Does that help you out?

Remote Desktop usually refers to RDP, a Microsoft protocol that uses port 3389. Unfortunately Apple Remote Desktop is another name for VNC, which uses different ports (as you found). |

Note that comments don't provide notification so shouldn't be used for adding to a question Look at the router - it should show you what the WAN address is. If you're uncertain about things please post the IP you meant by "proper IP address" and your DynDNS hostname. |

Proper IP Address: 98.114.105.107 DynDNS hostname: heldp@verizon.net |

That's not your DynDNS hostname, that's an email address. Your hostname would look something like |
