General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi All,

I would like to use remote desktop from work to home over the internet.

So far, I've been doing my research and this is what 've set up.

1) Both my PC at work and at home is using WIN XP Pro SP2.

2) I've installed VNC Server 4 on my server machine (which is my home PC) and VNC Viewer 4 on my work PC.

3) I've signed up for an account at http://www.DynDNS.com.

4) I've also installed DynDNS Updater on my home PC. The program is up and running fine as I am able to connect my external dynamic IP to the domain given at my DynDNS account.

5) I am using a Net2Wire 2701HGV-E Gateway router and have opened / forwarded port TCP 5800, 5900, 5700 - 6000 and also 3389 (for Remote Desktop Connection), to forward these ports to my LAN internal IP.

6) I am able to PING my DynDNS domain and external IP from both my home and work PC.

7) I am able to connect from my laptop to my home PC, BUT only over LAN.

8) However, I am not able to connect from my work PC to my home PC over internet.

9) I have checked at http://checkip.dyndns.com/, to make sure of my external IP is correct. This is okay.

10) I have also checked at http://www.dyndns.com/support/tools/openport.html, to make sure that the ports I've opened on my router is open and listening for connections. This is okay.

11) I've disabled all firewall and anti-virus from both my home PC and work PC.

12) I am STILL not able to connect my work PC to my home PC over the internet using either VNC or RDC. I've tested connecting from my work PC to my home PC, still nothing.

13) I've even tested using my home PC, using either VNC or RDC, to connect to my external IP and DynDNS domain and connect to my home PC (a loopback), and all I got were connection errors.

14) It ONLY works when I use my home PC, using either VNC or RDC, to connect using my LAN internal IP. Then I can get a connection (a loopback), which is redundant to me.

Sorry for the long thread, but I felt like I needed to explain a clear picture. I'm missing something here. I'm not sure what though. Could it be my HOSTS file ? Or must I set up an IIS ? Has it got anything to do with my router NAT setting ?

I hope you guys can help cause I'm truly at my wits end over this matter.

Thank you very much for any input. Much appreciated.

The network at your workplace is probably protected by a firewall, not on the PCs but network-wide firewall rules. Are you on the technical staff?

I recommend trying from another home network instead, e.g. from a friend's or family member's house, which you know does not have limitations on outbound traffic.

Thank you VikingTiger for the input.

Yup, I am one of the technical staff. Hmm, there is a hardware firewall installed but not sure whether it' supposed to filter outbound traffic requests like RDC and VNC as well.

I have tried as VikingTiger suggested, which was to try to connect using another laptop through the internet, to connect to my external IP, with RDC and VNC. Amazing !!! Success.

I'm actually typing this reply over RDC from my laptop to my computer. I guess this means my network hardware firewall filters outbound traffic requests like RDC and VNC afterall.

Very weird though, cause I can use TeamViewer 5 over my work network and connect to my home PC. Oh well.

Thanks VikingTiger !!! Very much appreciated.. :)
