I'm using Asus WL500W with internal DynDns update utility and I've configured 2 host at http://dyndns.org. But there is only one field to specify hostname. Is there some tricks to update my hosts both at the same time or the only way is to install update utility on the server?

The DynDNS update protocol allows for multiple hostnames at once. "Comma separated list of hostnames that you wish to update (up to 20 hostnames per request)". Therefore you could try this with the hostname field. Don't be frustrated if this doesn't work then, because the router may use this field for other purposes, e.g. to see if an update was successful, so it may get confused with a comma separated list of hostnames.

Thanks for your reply! I've tried to do that but first i've found that the field is limited to 32 chars (what could be a reason to do so?!) Ок, i've override this limit using firebug and entered my hostnames comma separated. But after restart only first one had been updated, so it seems that router really use this field unobvious way right as you said...

Wow... It works now! First time I had entered hostnames separated with comma and (!) space and it wasn't working. Now I did it like this "host1.dyndns.org,host2.dyndns.org" and it started to update correctly. So thank you once again :)

Brilliant! =) I've often encountered problems with the routers' input validation (because they have expected a single hostname). I didn't think of this at all.

Ha, I didn't expect this to work either. But if the programmers strictly followed the DynDNS specs, they would have taken care about this detail. And in this case - they did! And yes, the specs say nothing about spaces in the comma separated list of hostnames. This would not work well with HTTP(S) URLs...

If you have a computer/server running 24/7, using a software update client on that would be the recommended option.

If your router supports DNS-O-Matic, however, you could configure the router to use that as well. DNS-O-Matic is an intermediate update service, allowing you to update several hostnames and/or services with one update.

Thank you! It seems that wl500w doesn't support it so the only way to use utility on server. But I care about concurrency. Is it ok if one host will be updated through router and another using server utility? I read that it may cause to ban if you overload DynDNS-servers updating two ways. Or it goes different?

As long as the Update Clients update only "their" hostnames, no abuse is to be expected, given that the single updaters follow the rules. However, never ever share a hostname between different Update Clients!
