Hi, I have a problem whenever my modem change the IP address. I'd setup to view my home CCTV successfully but I realised that after few hours, I cannot login to my hostname. When I login to my home network to compare the IP address in my modem and hostname, I found the IP address different. After refreshing in DYNDNS, I can connect to my hostname again. But this happen everyday where connection is fine for first few hours before the connection is lost again. I'm using H2Wire modem provided by my ISP. I read about using the Update client software but I have few questions. After running the program and setting it up from my computer, will the IP address refreshed itself even though my computer is not powered on in my home? If I bring my laptop to my office, will the program send my office IP to the DYNDNS instead of my home IP address? If that happen, then I will have error again right? Appreciate if someone can enlighten me. Thanks Jivin |

If the router supports updating DynDNS hostnames, you could try that. |

Hello Jivin, From the info you have provided, I think you are using the manual update method by logging into the dyndns and refreshing your hostname IP based on your internet's WAN IP. This method has it's pros and cons. Pro: You are unlikely to encounter dyndns banning your hostname for abuse (repeated updates even though the IP has not changed) Con: It's tedious and inconvenient You have 2 alternatives as mentioned by VikingTiger and Cry Havok:
Service: It can be a list box containing dyndns, no-ip, etc Hostname: the hostname you want to associate with the WAN IP (the one you manually update) Username: your account username Password: your account password Email: your account email address Pro: Updates are automatic and almost instant Con: Some brand modem/router have an update abuse problem and this will get your hostname banned. You'll never know until you try, but it helps to google your modem brand and model for issues beforehand.
Pro: Again, you are unlikely to encounter dyndns banning your hostname for abuse (repeated updates even though the IP has not changed) Con: Additional expenses
Pro: same as #1 Con: same as #1 and #2
Pro: It's a cheap workaround Con: Turning on and off your PC frequently may shorten the lifespan of it's parts. I'm sorry, but you will have to assume that risk since I provided you other alternatives above. Hope this was helpful. Good luck with your hostname update. :) |

Hi, thanks for all your help and advice. Managed to solve it. Realised that both my DVR has DDNS settings so I believe by keying the details in both systems result in the hostname being reported as abusive. I request for unblock and disable one of the DVR DDNS setup (since under same hostname). Till date, I do not have much prob.... Thanks all and great weekend. Based on what you've said it sounds like your current update client is not working. Are you currently using the router's Dynamic DNS update feature? If you decide to run an update client software on a computer, that computer must always be on for it to work, and it must remain in your home network (because it will determine the WAN IP of whatever network it's located in and use that). |

Sorry but I'm not rally good at these network terms. How do I know I'm using the routers Dynamis DNS update feature? I only know that I had configured the port forwarding in the modem (firewall setting) and then create the hostname in dyndns pointing to my ip address. It does work but the connection is lost after few hours and everytime I logged in to check, I realised the DYNDNS IP address is different from my modem's IP. So I just clicked to refresh the IP in DYNDNS and then I can connect to my hostname again. Then few hours the same thing occured again. As I do not have a server in my home, it seems the installing the update client is not a solution to me. Any other solution? |
