General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I've got Custom DNS set up for my domain, which will be set up using subdomains too.

At the moment it works perfectly for the domain itself - and when I restart my modem, the IP address for the main host gets updated.

But for my subdomains, such as http://subdomain1.domain.com, the IP address doesn't get updated.

I've probably just missed something simple, but can't seem to get this working as expected.

Any ideas?

Guess another way to ask the question - is there a way to have all my subdomains be updated without having to change my client config. I've also tried with ddclient on the Ubuntu box the server is running on, but again needs specific subdomains... it would be great if I can get away from having to make changes like this every time I add a new subdomain

First, about the wildcard option: That option is only for Dynamic DNS hostnames (DynDNS Pro), not custom zones. Besides, that option has been deprecated in the update system and is ignored.

Just create your own wildcard CNAME for *.yourdomain.tld, pointing to yourdomain.tld.

Note that when using the above approach, you're never "updating" subdomains. The wildcard CNAME is merely referring clients looking up an unknown subdomain to your main domain name's A record.

Superb... works perfectly for what I want to achieve.

I knew it would be an easy one - thank you very much for your suggestion.

Did you configure your update client to update those other names? How you do that depends on the update client you're running, but all well behaved clients should allow you to enter a comma separated list (eg www.example.com,ftp.example.com,mail.example.com).

Thanks for the reply,

My modem does the update to DynDNS - it's a Billion 7300RA.

It only lets me enter one domain name though, with no commas allowed.

There is a wildcard setting, which I've set to Enabled, which says this in the manual: "Select this check box to enable the DYNDNS Wildcard"

But I'm guessing that's not right as it still only updates the main domain, not any of the subdomains.
