I am using a Q-See DVR as a hardware update client. How long should it take the DYNDNS account to show that it is updating

It shall update only when the IP has actually changed. The next time your IP changes, the Q-See should be expected to send an update to DynDNS.

Then how do you test it to make sure it is working before the IP address changes.

I would expect it to send an update as soon as you configure it (enable it for the first time). After that, it shall compare the current public IP against the one it has cached and update when the IP has changed.

You can log into your account and view your host list to see what time your hostnames were last updated. If you have DynDNS Pro, you can access the update logs for the last five days.
