General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I'm setting up a Mac OS X server with Postfix to use Mailhop Outbound for the first time. I followed the steps in the knowledgebase for 10.3 (some of which looks a little outdated for 10.6--most of what's needed can be set in the GUI and there's some security changes in 10.6 that conflict with the steps in the knowledgebase).

What I see in the log is

Sep 13 07:26:53 [server] postfix/qmgr[39633]: warning: connect to transport smtp: Connection refused

and

Sep 13 07:26:53 [server] postfix/error[72347]: 77B2356A7E: to=[outside email], relay=none, delay=4625, delays=4625/0.03/0/0.01, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (mail transport unavailable)

I'm not sure if this is a problem with Postfix not talking to Mailhop Outbound, or if it's being refused by Mailhop Outbound. I've tried setting up an email client on one of the machines that will use the server to use Mailhop Outbound directly. That worked, but I can't seem to get the server to use the same service.

Well dur, at some point I checked the box that says "hold outgoing mail" turning off the outbound relay.

I decided to do a little more experimenting to see just how much of the 10.3 configuration is still needed for 10.6.

You can use the Server Admin tool to set the relayhost, smtp_sasl_auth_enable, and smtp_sasl_password_maps.

However, the Server Admin tool does not set 'smtp_sasl_security_options=' which is required for Postfix to authenticate with Mailhop Outbound. So you can use the admin tool to set the information, then just add the security options line manually.

I also found that if you're trying to use the SSL/TLS, the guide directs the cache database to be written into /var/run/. Under 10.6 that's not a Postfix-writable directory, and it will try to redirect to /var/lib/postfix instead.
