Hi all, I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and it is giving me a problem. For some reason under the routers DDNS settings I entered 192.168.1.2 for the Internet IP Address option. When my router updates http://dyndns.org my IP shows up as 192.168.1.2 instead of my external IP. Linksys says that this setting cannot be changed. Does anyone have a suggestion?

What exact version of WRT54G do you have? Whatever, the status page should show you your WAN facing IP address, probably the same as shown on the DDNS page.

If this IP address is out of a private range like 192.168.x.x, there are two possibilities:

  • You have a modem between the router and the internet, which holds your public IP address, but propagates a private address to the WAN side of your router. You need to switch your modem to bridge mode in order to get the public IP address to the router.
  • Your ISP doesn't provide you with a routable public IP address, but with a private IP address. In this case your network cannot be reached from the public internet. You had to call your ISP to see what they can offer to make it work.

Yep, my status page shows 192.168.1.2 as my IP address. I will try to contact my service provider today to figure out a solution. I really appreciate the help. Hopefully customer service will be as knowledgable!

Do you also have an ADSL modem? What you're describing is usually related to that.

Good point, but this is what I listed already. As the OP didn't jump onto this, I would think he does not have a modem.

Sometimes repetition is the way people notice things ;) I've seen plenty of cases where having one of us repeat something the other has said causes the OP to read it and actually notice it.
