General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

On 28-Aug I receive a message regarding "Changes to NEW http://DynDNS.com AccountsReceived". According to the instructions of the revised business model, to maintain a free account a subscriber must either "log into your account or update your hostname monthly". Logging into the account is clear; what is meant by "update hostname"? Does this mean providing an update to the IP address associated with a given hostname within a month?

X.

That is not new, and not part of the changes. Free hostnames have expired after 30 days inactivity for as long as I can remember, probably for as long as I've used DynDNS (I believe I registered my account in 2004).

What they changed was the selection of domain names available for DynDNS Free hostnames, and the total number of free hostnames allowed per customer (reduced from five to two).

Yes, updating the hostname.

Many users with dynamic IP addresses get a new IP several times a month, some even get a new IP multiple times per day. For those users, this will never be an issue, as long as they are running an update client.

For users who very rarely get a new IP (such as myself, who had my previous dynamic IP for 15 months), an update client would not detect an IP change within 30 days from the previous update, and consequently not send updates regularly enough to avoid expiration.

Some update clients do however have (or allow you to specify) a maximum interval between updates, such as ddclient for UNIX-like systems, which will let you ensure that your account stays active automatically.

Thanks VikingTiger. I've only been using this service for about two months, and the message they sent me regarding the "changes", included the update requirement, which I did not see stated any where else; I assumed it was part of the changes.

Thanks again for the clarification.

The problem is that if you miss update due to service outage, then your account is deleted and you can no longer sign up for a free account. I just found out the hard way that the free service essentially doesn't exist anymore. I don't need a paid account, I'm not running a commercial website or anything, only used the service for occasional access to my home computer. I'm not inclined to give money to a company that put me out of commission without even a "goodbye forever" email warning.
