General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi..

This is my first time to try dynamic dns so im sorry for being novice :)

I own a website that is registered with bluehost, my website address is http://www.dubaiplaytime.com.. This website is made for my online gaming server. My online gaming server is hosted at home, while http://dubaiplaytime.com is on shared hosting from http://bluehost.com

I chose http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com as my dynamic dns.

To keep it clear, http://dubaiplaytime.com is hosted on http://bluehost.com, so i dont need to change http://dubaiplaytime.com's whole dns info.

I wanted to create a dynamic dns for my home connection's dynamic IP Address.

I did the following:

  1. I purchased Custom DNS from dyndns and added http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com as zone.

  2. I went to my cpanel at bluehost, added an "A Record" for http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com. http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com is now pointing to dyndns servers.

  3. I have a linksys router that has the option to connect to http://dyndns.org. I went to my router's config page, put my username, password, and hostname then clicked Connect but the status keeps saying "Please wait".

The problem is that I still see that my dynamic dns is inactive.

I need help please.

Fine, so you could go with your zone as a whole over to DynDNS Custom, and you have then full control over your DNS. You already have anything you need. Why not?

You configure the main site (with and without www.) to point to your webhoster's server, probably a static IP address, and the subdomain to point to your home network. You keep this subdomain A record updated with your dynamic IP address information. That's it!

Sorry I'm lost a little bit. Shall I click on Add Custom DNS Service or Add Zone Services to transfer my domain from bluehost to dynamicdns? I'm reading the how to transfer providers without downtime but this part got me lost. Do i have to pay additional fees?

That is strange. Technically it is not at all complicated for a provider to offer the ability to create NS records for sub-domains.

If you want to move the DNS for the entire domain, make sure the hosting provider doesn't change IPs on their web servers regularly (and without prior notice), as you will have to re-create the records which point to the provider's servers. If their web server changes IP, you will have to update the affected hostname(s) in your DNS zone.

For step 2 you need to add NS records, 5 records in total listing the name servers covered in the DynDNS Custom DNS documentation.

Note too that you're not using Dynamic DNS but Custom DNS. They're different services.

When I said NS records I really did mean NS records, not A records - if I'd meant A records I'd have said that (and that's what the documentation would have said). Remove your A records and create the NS records.

A records are Address records, they resolve to IP addresses. NS records are Name Server records and provide the details of the DNS server responsible for records.

Indeed, which is why I think it was wise of DynDNS to change the names of their services to DynDNS Free/Pro and DynDNS Custom, as then the service names do not collide with general terms. Dynamic DNS (as a technical feature) is indeed a part of the Custom DNS / DynDNS Custom service.

Cry Havok, Thanks for replying. I just did what you told me and added all the 5 records. In my cpanel at bluehost, it looks like that now:

http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com. 14400 IN A 204.13.248.76 http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com. 14400 IN A 204.13.249.76 http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com. 14400 IN A 208.78.69.76
http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com. 14400 IN A 91.198.22.76
http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com. 14400 IN A 203.62.195.76

it still says that Custom DNS inactive. I think I need to wait 2 hours for the changes to take affect if i'm not wrong. I will update you after two hours.

No, you do not need to transfer your domain registration and your webhosting package from bluehost to DynDNS, just the DNS hosting part. This is called delegation. See this article. And no, this shouldn't be with additional cost, because you paid bluehost for domain registration and webhosting, and DynDNS for DNS hosting.

Not too sure how to change it with your existing DynDNS Custom package, I hadn't to do this. If you already declared cs.dubaiplaytime.com as your zone for your DynDNS Custom package, you may need to contact DynDNS support to ask them to change this to dubaiplaytime.com. I believe you can't do it yourself, but I may be wrong. Someone may correct me then.

You will need to cancel the Custom DNS service you purchased for http://cs.dubaiplaytime.com and then purchase it again for http://dubaiplaytime.com. There is a 30 day refund policy.
