General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I have set up my custom DNS, but can't get this to work. I'm not sure what the issue is but cannot see anything from outside my LAN.

I have my hostname set as http://home-server.richjones.info. What do I need to do to make my different computers see my LAN from the internet. ANy help appreciated.

I have recently tried to setup a wide area bonjour network with Custom DNS, with varying degrees of success. I still have an outstanding issue, for which - sadly - I have not yet got any response from DynDNS support or from this community (see this post).

But, in addition to reading the guide re-linked above (which I assume you have done and successfully completed), I have found out the following:

  1. WAN Bonjour is not that well supported for windows, and it seems that Apple no longer release Bonjour for Windows… just Bonjour Print Wizard (and some sub-set of bonjour with iTunes). But, if you have a Time Capsule, I ASSUME you use a Mac?

  2. Your other computers (when outside the LAN) MUST have your domain name in the "Search Domain" list. (System Preferences, Network, Network Card, Advanced Settings, DNS). Note, that if you use Wireless AND Ethernet, you need to do this for each network device.

  3. It might also help if you create (and this is NOT documented by DynDNS, which it SHOULD be) "_services._dns-sd._udp.nicfletcher.eu" records for each service you want to be able to browse.

Essentially, you create a PTR record, with: *_services._dns-sd._udp.mydomain.com* on the left side, and the service type you want to browse on the right side, for example: *_afpovertcp._tcp.mydomain.com*

I found this made a big difference to using my iPhone (if you get the Discover App) and when using a windows client and when using Bonjour Browser on the Mac. But it seems that Mac OS X and Finder don't really need this. But I liked the idea of being able to browse on my iPhone over 3G as a totally independent and quick way of testing.

I suspect point 2 is your main problem.

I am also assuming that you are ONLY sharing your TimeCapsule over the WAN? I still have a problem with sharing more than one of the same service (for example the drive on a stationary computer as well as time capsule, or in my case an Airport Extreme (with external disks) AND a Time Capsule AND a stationary computer.

I hope this helps.

A lack of response here just means you're one of very few people using Bonjour with DynDNS's services. It's hard for us to help you with something we know nothing about ;)

Re: 1) That's right, it's the latest. It's badly labelled enough that there's a support article on http://apple.com stating if you're looking for Bonjour, you're actually after the Printer Wizard ;)

Re: 2) If you add a hostname that's within your zone (ie: http://mymac.mydomain.com) via Sys Prefs -> Sharing -> Edit it should be added to the default list of browse domains (ignore user/pass and leave advertise services un-ticked).

Re: 3) That'll only help with utils that issue a meta-query to find the service types available. A real app won't do this as it will already know what services it's working with.

I can't see a way on this forum to PM a user, so a quick comment to Cry Havok:

My complaint, politely made - I hope, was that I filled out the support form on the support page with details of my issue, and I have not heard a single thing from support in 10 days.

I fully appreciate that mac users are in a minority, and I don't expect magic or instant response from people who do this in their free time (and for which I'm really grateful).

But, DynDNS are advertising Custom DNS as a WAN Bonjour solution to Mac users, so my comments were directed more at DynDNS than any members here. Thanks.

It looks like you're up and sharing services ok:

$ dns-sd -B _afpovertcp._tcp http://richjones.info
Browsing for http://_afpovertcp._tcp.richjones.info
Timestamp A/R Flags if Domain Service Type Instance Name
12:06:15.687 Add 2 0 http://richjones.info. _afpovertcp._tcp. home-server

You most likely just need to do as Nic suggests and configure your clients to browse http://richjones.info (if you haven't already). If you're unsure of how to do this, please let us know what your clients are and we'll go from there.

Best is to work through this guide, and you will see how less related it is to the equipment you're using.
