General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi there.

I'm relatively new to http://DYNDNS.COM and have a custom DNS service here and hosting my NAS at home. I am able to access my NAS, etc. However, as I will be going overseas soon for work, I will probably need to ensure that my ISP's dynamic IP, when changed, automatically updates my Airport Extreme as well. I will not be switching my Mac on at home during this period, so having a DynDNS update client running would be out of the question.

My objective: To ensure my Airport Extreme automatically updates http://DYNDNS.COM when the dynamic IP issued by my ISP changes, it automatically updates http://DYNDNS.COM.

I have followed the guide here: https://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/apple_airport_with_custom_dns.html

Double-triple checked as well.

Let's take for example, my custom host name is "your-custom-zone.com" I have added the following in DynDNS custom DNS settings under the expert 'mode' for my domain.

_dns-update._udp 60 SRV 0 5 53 http://update.dyndns.com.
http://b._dns-sd._udp.your-custom-zone.com 60 PTR http://your-custom-zone.com.
http://lb._dns-sd._udp.your-custom-zone.com 60 PTR http://your-custom-zone.com.
http://db._dns-sd._udp.your-custom-zone.com 60 PTR http://your-custom-zone.com.
http://r._dns-sd._udp.your-custom-zone.com 60 PTR http://your-custom-zone.com.
http://dr._dns-sd._udp.your-custom-zone.com 60 PTR http://your-custom-zone.com.

I then proceeded to my Airport Extreme. For example, my airport extreme's name is "my-aiport.local".

I proceeded to add under "Use dynamic global hostname" with the following

Hostname: http://my-airport.your-custom-zone.com
Username: generated from my TSIG settings
Password: generated from my TSIG settings

Shortly I did see an automatic creation of an "A-record" added into my custom DNS with the following

my-airport.your-custom-zone.com A-record XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX Nov. 2010 8:02 AM

Does the above actually mean that my Airport-extreme successfully communicated itself to http://DYNDNS.COM and is actually keeping it updated?

Also I checked my airport logs and saw the following error message,

"Wide-Area Bonjour error for "my-airport.your-custom-zone.com" (-65537)"

That messaged appeared at random times. Sometimes in a span of 2-3 minutes and the next one will happen in the next 35 minutes. My ISP's issued IP to me has not changed yet, so I don't really know if this is going to work or not but I'm hoping it is working. I did check on my Custom DNS Host Update Logs but I can't see anything with regard to my Airport Extreme trying to communicate with http://DYNDNS.COM or at least attempting to.

My questions are.

  1. How do I know that my Airport Extreme is configured properly with http://DYNDNS.COM
  2. Are there logs I can check (other than the Host Log which yields no results or my Airport Extreme Logs) which actually tell me that my Airport Extreme is at least trying to communicate with http://DYNDNS.COM to keep it updated, be it on my own Airport Extreme or on http://DYNDNS.COM?

I need some form of re-assurance. :)

Regards, Aaron

Certainly the first of those is the case.

"Wide-Area Bonjour error for "my-airport.your-custom-zone.com" (-65537)"

A quick Google shows many threads on that subject, including on the Apple forums. This one in particular may be relevant.

My questions are.

  1. How do I know that my Airport Extreme is configured properly with http://DYNDNS.COM

  1. From what you've posted that seems to be the case, though few of us here use Apple so confirmation will probably only come when your IP changes, or after some 25 to 30 days when a forced update should occur
  2. The Host update logs only apply AFAIK to Dynamic DNS hosts, not DNS Custom hosts (which yours is)

Also, I disabled my Back to my Mac and I don't have any the error message with the Wide-Area Bonjour error.
