General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Verizon in New York apparently changes Dynamic IP Addresses very frequently--more often than every ten minutes. The DNS Updater does not update frequently enough resulting in wrong IP Address information. How can this be made to be more current?

There is a download link and a KB article for using ddclient with DynDNS.

The official client only checks for a new IP every 10 minutes, so you need something else. Indeed, I'd suggest that you must use a hardware client connected directly to your ISP, something that uses the interface IP change to trigger an update (not all do).

Off the top of my head, the only thing that will help you here is ddclient, a tool that's available in DD-WRT and OpenWRT (alternative firmware for certain SOHO routers) in the Optware packages (not the default install). It can also be installed onto a unix system connected directly to your ISP.

There may be other options, but none that I'm immediately aware of.

Thank you for the information. The MODEM belongs to Verizon and it does not include DDNS. IS DDCLIENT a Windows app or Router firmware? Perhaps I should add a router that has DDNS built in. My only issue is space.

Is there a registry entry that controls the update period?

ddclient is a unix script, though it may have a Windows port.

When looking for a router your problem will be finding one that updates using the interface IP changes, not a periodic check. Finding out how the router does that won't be easy, you'll be best with something that supports DD-WRT or OpenWRT and the Optware package set so you can install ddclient. Alternatively any very small PC (the mini-ITX form factor is ideal for this) can have any of the BSDs (OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD) or Linux (of your choice) installed on it.

Is there a registry entry that controls the update period?

Not that we (other customers) know of.
