General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I have purchased and installed 3 LTS DVR systems for my 3 business locations. Installation was easy and I even got them to show up on my internal LAN. But the instructions are terrible and no one answers at the manufacturer. I've been wrestling with this for over 2 weeks with no remote progress. The most important location uses a Netgear router Wgr614 version 7 series. The DVR has 3 choices; static IP, DCHP, and PPoE. My service is ADSL and requires a password, but it is stored in the router and the modem. The DHCP has a DDNS option that I have selected and set up. I have a Dyndns account and have set the host with my What's my IP? address. I'm not sure how to actually use the DDNS. Do i need to set the DVR with the static address? I don't want to make my router or service static. There are 3 choices for internet ports and I have chosen 3500. There is also a MEDIA port with an address of 9000. I'm not sure which one I should port forward??

I've scoured the web and done the suggestions but nothing has worked!

1 Answer:

I'd suggest you start here, which covers the basics. In summary

  1. You need to install an update client to keep your hostname at DynDNS updated with your current IP address
  2. Your DVR must have a static IP address on your LAN
  3. You'll probably need to forward both ports (3500 and 9000) since one will be for the administration interface and one will be for streaming the video

Is the static IP address in the router or in the DVR? If I use the DynDNS update (router or software) should I turn off the DynDns option in the DVR? Because it is only available in the DHCP setup page. Thank you for your help!

The DVR must have the static IP, but you may be able to do that by assigning what's called a static lease in the router. Ensure you only have one device performing updates - if you configure more than one your account may end up blocked for abusive updates.
