General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I am new to DynDNS, but old to DNS. I have had a private domain (mcgillsociety.org) running now for some 10+ years with no problems. I have switched ISPs and my new ISP no longer provides any DNS services so I've begun switching to DynDNS, Custom DNS Service.

As part of this process, I will (eventually) be switching from Bind 8 running on Tru64 Unix to Bind 9 running on Mac OSX.

I have been trying to use the DNScog tool to set things up. It returns several things which I find mystifying.

  1. First, it claims my name server (Bind 8) does not return a SOA record. However, DIG shows it clearly. Can anyone explain what is happening here.

  2. DNScog claims that the mail server (sendmail) does not accept mail to Postmaster... which it in fact does.

  3. It claims that "no banner" is displayed by the mail server ... what "banner" is it looking for.

These couple of questions will do for now.
It is incredibly difficult to post to this forum -- it demands a "tag" but provides no list of acceptable tags.

It claims for a more explicit reply on your HELO/EHLO, clearly introducing itself to the client.

Normally, if you start to fill the tags field, it will provide a drop-down list of similar tags to select from. If you don't see them, you may have a problem with your browser, e.g. JavaScript or CSS deactivated or version outdated.

Your domain registration still shows the DNS servers as being those at dca.net, plus spacecat.mcgillsociety.org, this may cause some issues.

The exact error shown about SOA is:

spacecat.mcgillsociety.org. did not return SOA

Using a different DNS query tool provides a different answer:

Security: Server http://spacecat.mcgillsociety.org (98.140.106.69) is recursive

which you may want to fix quickly ;)

Otherwise, it sounds like there's some form of filtering between you and the DNScog server, possibly at your own server. Does it's logs show that there were any connections from DNScog?

As for the tag issue, if you look at the top of the page, next to Questions there's a button for Tags, that lists all the active tags.

Recursion is supposed to be a good thing for DNS servers

However unless you're aware of what you're doing, you really don't want to expose a recursive DNS server to the Internet.
