General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

I am hoping someone can tell me what steps to take to troubleshoot an updating problem: Intermittently, every few days or so, my client encounters an updating error and then thereafter fails to update until I intervene to do a manual update.

Here are the details and background that may or may not be relevant: After my ISP helped me configure my modem as a bridge, I had to disable the update client built into my router (Netgear WGR614v7) because I also have a software client I downloaded from DynDNS, and I was blocked for abuse due to both update clients running. Since I disabled the router's update client, I have had intermittent problems (since 12/16/2010) with the software client not updating. I have several times had to update manually, but the problem keeps recurring. Once, I noticed that the situation only corrected itself after I logged onto the computer and signed into my DynDNS account--even though I did not actually change the IP address once I signed in, the client suddenly updated correctly. Since then, however, the problem continues to recur intermittently, between periods of successful updates for just a few days at a time.

When I e-mailed DynDNS support, staff responded: "Unfortunately, we have no ability to determine why the client is unable to determine the outside IP address. It could be due to connectivity issues.. It could be any number of problems. Sorry we can't be of more help."

Here is a snippet of one example of this problem from my log. Note that after the 12/31/10 WAN IP error, the client wouldn't update and so my service was unavailable until I discovered the problem on 01/03/2011 and did a manual update. This is typical of this intermittent problem.

I am not a "techie," just a do-it-yourselfer, so I hope someone can help me in terms I can understand. Thanks!

I turned off the software updater and turned on the updater in the router. I'll return to this post after several days to indicate whether this change worked or not.

1 Answer:

Yes, as DynDNS support staff said, "It could be due to connectivity issues". If they say this it means that the Update Client possibly doesn't cover connectivity issues. Therefore uninstall this and try a different one, e.g.:

to see if the problems disappear with this measure.

Okay, I'm not at the office now to check my update client version, so I'll try one of the above when I'm there. I have scoured my log and office schedule and realized that 1) I get an average of about 2 WAN IP errors per day; 1 is usually corrected in 10 minutes and 1 usually isn't corrected for hours or days until someone comes into the office and logs onto the computer (server). Most of the WAN IP errors that aren't corrected within 10 min occur in the wee hours of the morning, between 2 AM and 4 AM. I have no idea why. I'll follow up after trying your suggestions.
