General DNS & Domains Dyn Email Update Clients Dyn Developer

Hi,

I subscribe to custome dns. I want to forward http://mydomain.com to http://www.mydomain.com.

My understanding was that I would need a Webhope.

When I click on Host Services, I get no hostnames registerded. I have 2 options a)add hostname b)add host. Both takes me to Buy dynamic dns pro service .. I am confused please help.

Hope I don't have to pay for dynamic dns pro to add webhop to my custom dns.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards Codebrain

1 Answer:

You got the wrong page for DynDNS Custom maintenance. You do that here.

And no, you don't need a webhop. Create a CNAME (pointing to http://example.com) or an A record (with the same IP address like http://example.com) for http://www.example.com.

Follow the "Further Reading" links on the product page to see how to do this.

Edit:

now I cannot seem to figure out how to add WebHop to my Custom DNS as it keeps on taking me to Pay/Signup for Dynamic DNS. Your help will be appreciated.

WebHop is not a DNS function, but a HTTP/HTML function of a webserver. Therefore you can't do it with DynDNS Custom. You must have a website up and running to redirect from there to somewhere else.
You may be able to use your Google site for this. Not sure, I don't use Google webhosting.

Edit:

Please check this forum .. i am really confused now http://forum.dyndnscommunity.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1873&p=15506#p15506

Ah yes, I see. As I said, I don't have experience with Google sites or Google apps, but Google seems to support accepting redirections via CNAME. And also WebHop redirection is supported by DynDNS Custom. It's your choice. E.g. here it is explained how to do it in the standard interface. So, in fact, you need to configure on the Google side and on the DynDNS side. Also, read the article linked to in the beforementioned thread and follow the links in that article, and you should be done soon.

Thanks for your answers ... But I don't think this will work as I am hosing in Google Sites.

I cannot point a naked domain to a Google Site (example.com - no www) as this is not something Google Sites supports, so my only other option is to redirect the naked domain.

So Webhop was my answers .. now I cannot seem to figure out how to add WebHop to my Custom DNS as it keeps on taking me to Pay/Signup for Dynamic DNS.

Your help will be appreciated.

the link here says http://www.dyndns.com/services/webredirect/

it works with Custom DNS and Dynamic DNS I do not see any webhop config option

also here http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/custom/

Forward web requests with WebHop, or easily mark hostnames offline for maintenance or downtime.

here is the process, that i cannot follow http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/webhops_redirections.html

I quote: "Redirecting a Dynamic DNS or Custom DNS host to a different location is a fairly simple process."

Also i could do that easily in godaddy i moved to dyndns because of wild card CNAME (which godaddy does not support) ..

Can any one please tell me how I can forward/redirect requests from http://mydomain.com to http://www.mydomain.com

I am using Custom DNS service from DynDNS
