I have a working custom DNS account and have set up an apple airport/time capsule with dynamic global hostname using the excellent tutorial (https://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/apple_airport_with_custom_dns.html) My tsig/key work and the airport/time capsule shows up under my custom DNS. I also have internet guide filtering from DNS, and my airport router will show up as an option for one of the devices. (I set DNS server in airport to 216.146.35.35/x.x.36.36). Filtering will work for an hour or two then stop. My time capsule/airport will not show up as device option under internet guide, even though the correct ip is present for the device under my custom DNS. If I reboot the airport, it will show up again as an option for internet guide, work for hour or so and quit again. Any help would be appreciated. |

The IP address you use shouldn't be one from documentation, it should be the one for the service you want people to connect to. That probably will be the dynamic IP you refer to. Thanks for reply. I did initially have the root domain set to IP from my ISP (WAN IP?) with flaky functionality, so I tried the other IP seen in the tutorial thinking it may have magical functionality that I don't know about (like most of this dyndns stuff). I changed the root domain back to the WAN IP. However,I reset my aiport to factory settings and reentered the my network & global host settings, and set Internet Guide to the root custom domain, and it has been working all day! I've had to factory reset airport/time capsule for other issues, not just power on/off. Thanks for help!

Your Internet Guide defense plan not consistently working can have these most likely reasons:
Thanks for reply. #2-I have only been using one defense plan. #3-Not having evidence of current IP address used with another host at dyndns. I suspect a variant of #1, either my airport is not reporting IP correctly, or it is sending some message to dyndns that is making it drop out, or dyndns internet guide has an issue that is dropping the airport. Please see my post below with pics of my settings on airport and dyndns. Thank you again for detailed answer.

Here's my novice summary (thanks to help fromCry Havok and RotBlitz)for Airport Extreme / Time Capsule users wanting internet filtering/protection with Internet Guide: A. Get/purchase/register a unique "custom" domain name and set it up according to tutorial for airport and custom DNS B. In the advanced DNS preferences for for your custom domain, make sure all your domains and subdomains point to the IP supplied from your ISP, probably the IP from http://checkip.dyndns.com/ Do NOT use IP 204.12.249.212 shown in the picture- a red herring for fools like me. C. Under Internet:TCP/IP set airport's two DNS servers to internet guide's DNS servers, 216.146.35.35 and 216.146.36.36. Your dynamic global host settings with tsig and key should have been set from tutorial on airport and custom DNS D. Save your airport's configuration by exporting it in airport utility. Consider resetting airport to factory settings then reload the configuration you just exported. Otherwise airport seems to have unpredictable behavior. (similar flakiness with a new cable modem was resolved by factory reset of airport.) Note: I did not need to factory reset my airport expresses that extend the airport/time capsule router's network. E. Set up a defense plan in internet guide. Add a new network. You should see (at least) the options for your customdomain.xxx and your airport's name.customdomain.xxx. Just choose the domain.xxx and pick your defense plan. F. Make sure all computers, smart phones, wi-fi extenders (like airport express) have their DNS servers default to the airport router IP by leaving the DNS fields blank or set to the default DNS of a factory reset airport, 10.0.1.1 That process (finally) worked for all devices connected to my airport router's network. Extra: To check if filtering is working without bringing up an offensive site, blacklist an innocuous site in your defense plan, (something like "www.crazy.com" and type it in your web browser. It should be replaced with a blocked page from Internet Guide. Kudos! Great summary!

If filtering stops then it suggests that your DNS servers have changed. Have you checked that they are still set for the Internet Guide on the Airport and that each computer has the Airport as their DNS server? Thank you for answering. Yes, all other computers have the airport IP 10.0.1.1 as the DNS server, and the airport has the Internet guide DNS servers with a working connection. Yes, the IP address for the router matches what is showing at dyndns custom DNS host. The airport still temporarily show up under internet guide as"airport.xxxxxx.com" but then it drops off as an option. I will post a picture of my customDNS settings.

Well, I was going to post images of my settings, but "sorry, new users aren't allowed to use image tags" Thanks DynDNS! Anyway, my custom root domain is http://xxxxx.com Type A IP 204.12.249.212, which points to a virtual server. Is this IP correct or is it to be the same as my dynamic IP from the ISP. I got the 204.12.249.212 from the Airport tutorial? Thanks for help. |
