Traceroute uses ICMP, which is blocked by many devices, it and ping aren't useful diagnostic tools to test connectivity beyond your home network (and even there it may not work).

If you can't connect remotely to your service please start with this guide and edit your question to provide more details if you have problems. Please include:

  • Your router make, model and revision
  • The make, model and revision of any ADSL modem
  • The WAN IP shown in your router's management page
  • Your DynDNS hostname and the port you're using
  • What device you're trying to reach on your network

Good point! I can confirm your observations. Did you report this problem with DNSCog to DynDNS? This is a user to user forum, and it is pretty clear that we can't help you with this.

DNSCog is apparently still in beta, as the site explains, so do not expect full and correct functionality.

I am not having ICMP problems. As I said in my OP, the site http://network-tools.com successfully pings my box. I can also reach it from work and others can as well from other networks (not just verizon).

I run traceroute http://reefedjib.org.

DNS works. I can ping through my modem and router (using the external WAN port). It is only http://DNSCog.com that fails. I looked at the link you posted and I am successfully performing all 5 steps.

Thanks for your response.

However, that doesn't mean that the link between DynDNS and your ISP doesn't have filtering of ICMP.
