I've been reading all the questions and answers about this topic and I'm still confused. I'd like to use DynDNS's wide area bonjour feature to use my router (Time Capsule) as a hardware updater for my LAN's IP address, but access services using traditional port forwarding -- such as afp://subdomain.mydomain.com to access file sharing on the Time Capsule, or http://subdomain.mydomain.com:8181 to occasionally access the web server on a particular computer behind the router. Although the WAB features sound cool, I prefer traditional port assignments because it sounds like to use WAB in the "Bonjour-like" way, the search domain has to be added in system preferences on all computers outside the LAN. Right? I have configured everything I want to do successfully using a software update client in the past. I just want to save energy by not having to run a software update client on a computer 24/7, and instead use the Time Capsule as a hardware update client (like you can do with some other routers). Is it possible to use DynDNS's WAB feature for this more traditional purpose? I've tried (by following the posted instructions for WAB setup) but so far failed; but just want to ask first whether it's even possible before I go further. If not possible, I'd probably still look into using the WAB features in the more "Bonjour-like" way -- but advice is appreciated. |

For future users: I could not get this to work reliably. Two times now, I've followed the instructions and it does work for the first five days or so. During the period when it was working, I even restarted my DSL modem several times, causing my IP address to change (without restarting my Time Capsule), and the change updated correctly at DynDNS -- seemed to work perfectly. But both times, after around five days my domain stopped working and I discovered my IP address had changed and no update was propagated. The most recent time, I discovered that the A record had been deleted from my custom DNS listings at DynDNS. When I re-created the record, it would no longer update. Resetting my DSL modem and Time Capsule did not help. I conclude that this service is simply not reliable, whether the fault of DynDNS, Apple, or limitations of WAB I do not know. Certainly DynDNS provides essentially no email or forum support as far as I can tell, contrary to their claim of "thousands of DNS ninjas." I was treated very rudely over email support, as was another user who posted on this forum -- a rather distasteful experience as a paying customer, they could have been polite at least. To my knowledge, users with this configuration should not be fooled by the instructions they read on DynDNS into thinking that DynDNS's service will work for them, at least in the way I described in the original post. I've switched to DynDNS's traditional software updater on a computer that I now have to leave on 24/7. Note, I think subsequent to my email exchange, DynDNS at least added a note to one of the KB articles indicating that no technical support is provided -- that's good. However they neglected to add add that note to the Apple-specific KB article (http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/apple_airport_with_custom_dns.html), they should add it there too so future customers aren't misled as I was.

Note that there's very few people who stop by this forum who understand WAB. It may be some time before your question is answered. If you haven't already I'd recommend you read the other questions tagged WAB. Thanks for the advice, I have (tried to)... to me the existing commentary gives conflicting answers to this question.
